I remember the guy on the ladder fell off one time.

It used to be that the 5-second count on the throw-in required that the ball be TOUCHED inbounds within 5 seconds, not just thrown. This eliminated a lot of long passes.

Iirc, it was 2/3 of the court instead of half-court. The defense had to stay in the back 2/3 of the way they were shooting, and the offense had to stay in the front 2/3. They were only allowed 2 dribbles too, I think.

In Iowa, up until around 1993 or 1994, only the big schools were playing with 5 players. My school played "six-player" basketball for the girls. It was half court.

...

My hometown made the switch in 1992 from girls 6on6 to the game you see today. We were 2A at the time (approximately 55-75 kids per class). Rules were as snaqwells described.

The 4-H leagues (the small town version of AAU) switched the girls over about 5 years earlier when they sensed the time was coming. (my ma was a coach for a couple years) That helped ease a lot of the schools into it.

BTW I remember seeing one of the funniest things in 1996 when the girls team went to state. They finished the regular season 15-1 and the boys finished 1-15 and fans would leave the gym after the girls game so that the boys would only have about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the crowd left. Never have seen anything like it again.
