Boys Division semi-final. Team A in comfortable lead midway thru second half and 2 man crew is in cruise control. Team foul for Team B is 9 with A1 at the FT line for 1/1. Lead, who is also Referee, administers the first FT, A1's shot is good. Coincidentally with the ball entering the basket, Lead whistles a "T" on Team B for having six players on the court (incomplete substitution). Lead waves off the made FT, awards A1 two shots for Double Bonus with lane clear, then the two for the technical. Getting beyond the officials' gooning of the substitution and allowing ball to go live, was Lead's process correct? Based upon when he blew his whistle, he clearly observed the technical foul infraction before the ball went through the basket on the made FT but after the ball was live. I'm guessing he ruled the ball was dead upon the commitment of the foul and therefore the FT should not have been attempted. However, once he made the ball live on the front end of the 1/1, it seems that the provisions 6-7 (Dead Ball rules) over ride and in particular 6-7-7 (exception b): "The ball becomes dead, or remains dead, when a foul occurs....exception (b): the ball does not become dead until the try or tap ends......when ...a foul occurs while a try or a free throw is in flight." I thought at the time, results of the FT should stand but this Referee is one of the most experienced in our area and he doesn't make many mistakes. With the game scenario as it was, the whole thing was a yawner to the fans, but it suddenly becomes a whole lot more interesting if A is down by three with ten seconds left, A1 misses the front end; whistle, "T"......makes the double bonus and two technical foul shots.

I would think the order in which the infraction occured should be followed. I would think as soon as the official have knowledge of sub infraction ball becomes dead immediately T. Give report at table clear lane. Give A opportunity at 1-1 lanes cleared, then shoot 2 shots for T lanes cleared. Team A OOB mid-court,

A1's first free throw counts, as per rule 6-7-7Exception(b), as you cited above. A1 now gets his second free throw for the 1/1 with the lanes cleared. Note that if A1 had missed the free-throw when the "T" was called, there would be no other FT's taken for the 1 and 1. It's the same as missing the first shot of any 1 and 1. Now any team A player(s) gets 2 FT's with the lanes cleared for the technical foul. That "T" goes into the book as the tenth foul for bonus considerations. Team A gets a throw-in at center opposite the scoring table.

Yup, the official screwed that one up.
