Directly under Team A's basket, A1 is fouled by B1 (contact on the arm) while attempting an underhand scoop shot. During continuation of the try, the ball traveled through the basket from the bottom, hit the backboard and then fell back through the hoop.
What is the correct ruling? A. Foul, try is successful, award two points and a free throw. B. Foul, try became dead when it enters basket from below, award two free throws. Rule 5-1 does not specifically address a ball traveling through the basket from below prior to entering it from above. Rule 6-7 does not specifically address situation, other than to confirm "with continuation" the ball does not become dead until the try ends.

Did you find the violation under 9.4? It is labeled "Travel, Kick, Fist" and covers the ball passing through the basket from below.

What violation occurred that "killed" the ball?
Does 9.4 cover this? (My rulebook is at work) Do you have a rule reference to help me understand? Thanks!

SECTION 4 TRAVEL, KICK, FIST
A player shall not travel with the ball, as in 4-44, intentionally kick it, as in 4-29, strike it with the fist or cause it to enter and pass through the basket from below. NOTE: Kicking the ball is a violation only when it is an intentional act; accidentally striking the ball with the foot or leg is not a violation. PENALTY: The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation. |
