I could not find the rule that specifically says that the ball must hit the rim on a free throw shot. In other words, backboard alone is not good.

I could find rules that inferred but nothing that seemed clear and specific.

Well if I were writing for a paper I would have phrased the sentence so: I found rules from which I could infer...

But I took an improper shortcut.
