Does anyone here know what the rule is if a kid wants to come out for basketball now? There is a situation going on in the valley where a football player now wants to come and play on the basketball team. Is this allowed to be done right away or do they need to get approval via the state (PA). He has attended the school all year.

I coach in VA and to my best understanding, you can add players to your Eligibility List (turned in prior to 1st game) at any time. So as far as the rules go it's probably ok. Administratively and team chemistry wise it probably shouldnt be allowed. How would you feel if you had practiced all season long and played 10+ games and your coach decided to allow a new player to join the team and he/she took your playing time. OUCH...TROUBLE ON THE HORIZON!!!

That is what i had thought. I understand what you are saying about the team chemistry. I was torn when asked my opinion. The kid that is coming out is a stud. He is a D-1 football player and is extremely good at bball. He asked the coach because another star player had just torn his ACL. He told the coach that he felt bad for the team and knew he could help them.

Interestingly enough, this situation is at a small, private school that is a basketball factory. It has attracted much controversy throughout the years for a variety of situations.

If its a private school then I'm sure anything goes.

We have a state regulation that a kid must have 10 days of practice before he is eligible to play in games. Perhaps your state/league has something similar. That notwithstanding there is nothing in the NFHS rules forbidding the kid from playing.
