If you are watching a game, and fans around you are talking about a rule and they are misinterpreting it, and sometimes loudly to the officials, are you inclined to correct them? They may or may not know you are an official.

Example: I was watching a YMCA football game one Sat. morning and a person, who knew I was an official, asked for my interpretation on a situation that had occurred the night before in a 4A varsity game. He said one fan was going nuts over where the ball was placed after a missed try on a field goal. Sad part was, this nut was a FB coach at the middle school. Had I been there, I'd like to think I'd be able to politely correct him without referring to him as 'coach.'

Opinions?

I make it a point not to correct fans. Doing so is like trying to empty the ocean with a teaspoon. If someone knows I am an official and asks if it was a good call or not, I simply tell them I don't comment on any game other than my own.

I usually don't, I have once taught parnets (I was R that game) but then they came forward in the half time pause and politly asked me a few questions, I answered and they learned something
I was tempted to learn some people a thing or two about three seconds and back court violations during a game a few days ago, but I never did, I usually don't talk rules with others then my friends or other officials

I used to add my two cents until I sat with the assignor and evaluator the other night. I learned alot. Instead of looking at the calls, he told me to look at the mechanics and floor positioning. It has really opened my eyes and will hopefully help with my mechanics and floor coverage.

I try to make a point of sitting away from those who know I am an Official. Quite often I am in the stands with fans from the opponents team. Its always good for a laugh after.

As an Official: Stay away from fan discussion before, during and after the contest.

As a Spectator: Please! Yes! Heck, yes! Lets all hold a free seminar of rules for the participants. What does it hurt?
