Just wondering which whistles you prefer... and what kind of lanyard you use.

GregSchumacher Wed Jan 25, 2006 02:45am

What whistle do you use

Fox 40...you mean there are other whistles out there?

I use the short smitty lanyard and am thinking about the choker kind as backup.

hooper Wed Jan 25, 2006 02:48am

Fox 40 Classic? And you mean the lanyard that attaches to your shirt?

stmaryrams Wed Jan 25, 2006 05:46am

In game - Fox 40 Classic with MPG on a Smitty.
In Pocket - same whistle with a regular lanyard with a noose slide.

I have a friend who is using the Dolphin this year. Very distinct sound in a loud gym.

crazy voyager Wed Jan 25, 2006 07:39am

I*m using an unamed one, it's got a little ball in it so the tone isn't as highly pitched as the fox 40, I prefer that (it still sounds as loud)

JugglingReferee Wed Jan 25, 2006 08:03am

Fox40 with CMG on a smitty.

Ditto in the pocket.

BearBoy Wed Jan 25, 2006 08:55am

Fox 40 Classic CMG with a nba noose lanyard.

I have the new Fox Dolfin...."what say you all on this one"...if you've used it?

Back In The Saddle Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:49am

I use the Fox 40 classic. Unless I'm at one of those multi-court places doing rec ball, then I use the Fox Pearl, because the sound is different and makes it easier for the players to know that it's my whistle, not a whistle from a nearby court.

lookin2improve Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:53am

Fox 40 Classic, noose lanyard

Thinking about trying Dolphin...anyone tried it yet?

ChrisSportsFan Wed Jan 25, 2006 11:56am

I've never seen the Dolphin in stores, do you have to order it online?

bgtg19 Wed Jan 25, 2006 12:41pm

Fox 40 Classic on a smitty (ditto in pocket). No namby, pamby mouth guard for me. :D

ThickSkin Wed Jan 25, 2006 01:14pm

Fox 40 classic now. I was using the mini unti the evaluator "recommended" that I change. I use a noose lanyard.

rotationslim Wed Jan 25, 2006 01:27pm

On fox 40

Do your ears ever ring after a game from the loud shrill blasts from that little miracle?

I have had that happen.. but I do rec ball and can do 2 games in a row.. and it is in a smaller gym so the sound probably bounces around..

I have thought of going to a quieter one.. but then I figured out I could just swallow it and let them play!

I bought it ($7.50!) and I like it. I started using it as a novelty and now I prefer it, but it isn't to much different from the Fox 40.

I use a Fox 40 classic with a noose.....

On Honigs, they have the Dolfin, it't imported from Japan apparently by FOX for Molten who makes it.

Snake~eyes Wed Jan 25, 2006 09:23pm

Fox40 with the noose.

Texas Aggie Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:32pm

I used the Fox CMG for football and liked it, but I didn't feel like it was as loud as I want it for basketball. All my football games were outside and that may have been the difference, but for some reason, I feel more comfortable with the original in my mouth at all times inside. Anyone experience this?

I hate anything around the neck, so I go with the smitty. For the life of me, I can't understand why some NFL Referees use the long lanyards where the whistle drops below their waist.

refTN Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:49pm

Fox 40 CMG. No lanyard preferable(only wear one if supervisor says so). Carry an extra one in my pocket for possession.

Yep. That's a beautiful feeling coming from hearing beautiful music my friend. Let that whistle sing.

refnrev Thu Jan 26, 2006 12:28am

I use an OLD Fox 40 CMG with a smitty. The old cmg's are the same size as the newer mini-cmgs. I use a mini for volleyball, but a classic cmg for everything else.

fonzzy07 Thu Jan 26, 2006 01:26am

Fox 40 with a short smitty for me.

NICK Thu Jan 26, 2006 02:33am

Fox40 on standard games and whistle with a pea on deaf games

No, no, no!!! :o

As many an assignor has said, "If you switch a whistle from pocket to pocket for possession, you will never work in my league."

Keep possession in your head!! Use scorer's table as a backup. I was watching a game earlier this year where there was a jump ball called, BOTH officials looked to the table, and in the meantime, A1 kicked B1 while she was on the floor.

Junker Thu Jan 26, 2006 10:32am

Did B1 deserve it? I use a Fox40 classic and the noose lanyard. I broke a hoop on a shirt once which made me switch to the noose. The only problem with the noose lanyard is the temptation to tighten it when I have lousy games like Tuesday night.

My mentors do it so it is good enough for me and plus I don't have a great brain either.

tjones1 Thu Jan 26, 2006 03:22pm

I use a Fox40 Classic with the Smitty noose. My spair is the same but sometimes I have the orginal Smitty. Couple things, I tried the Fox40 Mini this year and did not like it at all. My partner told me I wouldn't like it and sure enough, after the second dead ball we had, I changed back to the Classic. He caught me switching and started to laugh.

Secondly, I have seen the new Fox Dolphin once this season. You can certainly tell it's a different sound than the others. I didn't really like it, but I heard it's a very hot item. I'm sticking to the Classic though!

FWIW, I would guess that most, if not all, SEC and NBA officials do not use this "mechanic."

My whistle

My whistle is black. Has a string on it.

Did you spray paint an old metal whistle? ;)

Fox 40 CMG with smitty and Fox 40 Classic in pocket for backup.

bdub712 Thu Jan 26, 2006 11:31pm

Fox 40 CMG w/ a smitty lanyard. I have been asked to go to the smitty noose lanyard though. I have used it a couple of times, not a big fan.

Why do your prefer the smitty over the smitty noose?

Best guess is he doesn't like a string around his neck, but I don't know for sure.

I can empathize with that guess. I own a noose, but don't especially like the feel of it around my neck. Once I get going, I don't notice it. But the way it feels when I first put it on is usually enough to make me take it back off. I also don't like how it turns on my neck when I start to sweat.

It is a "Closter phobic" thing...I feel that I can not get it secure enough without choking myself. I also have a phobia about turtle necks, so I suppose it is the same thing.

Indy_Ref Fri Jan 27, 2006 09:42am

Dolfin & Smitty for me. There is no such thing as a Fox Dolphin!

tjones1 Fri Jan 27, 2006 05:51pm

Well...

According to Honig's, it's made by Molten, however it's distributed Fox40, therefore the Fox40 logo is printed on it. That's what I meant.

Having anything called a "NOOSE" around my neck doesn't sound appealing, Watched too many westerns in my lifetime to want a noose!

refnrev Fri Jan 27, 2006 07:06pm

Frankly, in my sometimes less that humble opinion, I don't see why anyone would use anything but a FOX 40.

fonzzy07 Fri Jan 27, 2006 11:04pm

Is it just me or does it sound better if the refs are using the same whistle. This is why i like the fox 40, its what most of the refs are using, it works great, and it would help to keep everyone in an assoc ussing the same whistle?

I think it was pretty safe to say that 99.9% of officials were using the Fox before the Dolphin came out. I have no idea how many people have tried and are sticking to it.

tomegun Sat Jan 28, 2006 08:21am

I worked a game this year and one of my partners was using the Dolphin. It didn't really stick out to me. Back in the day there was this whistle called the pearl (I think). Although it is very comfortable in the mouth, it stood out big time when compared to a Fox40. So no, I don't think the Dolphin sounds a lot different. He told me that it is louder with less effort than a Fox40.
