Hmmm. Good point. When I started officiating in 1997, the official who taught our class of newbies told us that he knew of a kid who broke a finger in a tie string loop and sued the ref (along with the school district and opposing player's parents) over it. That certainly made an impression at an admittedly impressionalble time! In retrospect, it does sound like an "urban legend" kind of story and I have not otherwise heard of tie string horrors. Nevertheless, once you join the Tie String Police, there's no going back....

Just tell the players to tuck in the shirt during dead ball periods a couple of times. It is really not that big of a deal if you ask me.

I always tell the players if they do not tuck in their shirts, they cannot complain about being held. They usually get the hint and it is not a problem.

Peace

I usually tell the players that they cannot complain, even if their shirts are tucked in. :-)

You guys can make fun of the tuck rule if you want to. I don't think it's a big deal, either. But my assignor does, and until I know for sure that it won't show up on my eval, I'll be a card-carrying member ofthe "shirt police." Not a battle I'm willing to lose my varsity status over.
It's not just our assignor Juulie, the edict comes from the state activities association. It's considered part of game management, and yes our evaluators do make note of it if we fail to require compliance.

Chess Ref:
We never stop a game for an untucked jersey, but during a dead ball will ask them to tuck them in if necessary. We are instructed not to allow substitutes to enter the game if the jersey is not tucked in. And yes, I have had a player replaced for deliberately ingoring a request to tuck it in.
