Last night I ended not having a varsity game, but worked a JV game and watched the #1 ranked 3A girls team blow out the #9 ranked 3A girls team. Pretty impressive game. I got to look at the program, and on the back was a page of conduct expectations for fans I thought I'd share. I really liked the fact that they were specifically telling fans was was approprate and what is not. I don't totally agree with everything on the list, specifically jumping on the bleachers and the one about signs, but I thought it was a good list. I don't know if this is a conference specific thing or if we're doing it in other areas of the state, but here's what it says:

In this EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION these behaviors are NOT acceptable;
Disrespectful conduct, including profanity, obscene gestures or comments, offensive remarks of a sexual nature, or other actions that demean individuals or the event. Penalty-EJECTION

Throwing articles onto the contest area. Penalty-EJECTION

Physical confrontation involving contest officials, coaches/directors, contestants or spectators. Penalty-EJECTION

Spectator interference with the event. Penalty-EJECTION

Jumping up and down on the bleachers. Penalty-WARNING/EJECTION

Use of artificial noisemakers, signs or banners. Penalty-WARNING/EJECTION

Chants or cheers directed at opponents. Penalty- WARNING/EJECTION

Different strokes for different folks.

Well that's one way to advise the fans, but I prefer the more positive approach by emphasizing good sportsmanship (ie., rather than "Chants or cheers directed at opponents. Penalty- WARNING/EJECTION", offer "Direct only positive comments and encouragement to your team")

I assume that school has an ugly history of fan participation.

I agree with being more positive, but actually it's one of the best places and in one of the best conferences I've worked over the past 7 years. I did like the fact that it spelled out things specifically.
