always wondering what the default rule should be when a foul or violation occurs in the grey area, on the border where it could be taken out of bounds on the side or on the baseline. The spot just inside the three point line on the sides or just outside the paint but not in the free-throw half-circle;

what should be a refs default rule when it could go either way, sideline or baseline?

Nevadaref Fri Dec 23, 2005 08:58am

Try to picture that diagonal line in diagram 21 from page 3 of the officials manual as best you can on the floor and use that. The real close ones are judgment calls.

blewthat Fri Dec 23, 2005 09:01am

I am talking about what to do on the real close ones where I could go either way and be right

what should be my default in those situations and why?

I am picturing the triangle and then imagining the calls that are right on the edge of the triangle

Nevadaref Fri Dec 23, 2005 09:18am

If in your opinion the play is truly right on where that line would be, then I advise doing the following:

1. If you are Trail or Center and you make the call then put the throw-in spot on the sideline.

2. If you are the Lead and make the call, then put the throw-in on the end line.

This gives a stronger appearance that the official is calling in their primary area of coverage.

Weather it's right or not, in our Assoc. we have decided that anything that happnes inside the 3 point line - it's going baseline.

All the coaches no this and accept it.

Obviously Mr. Grammar Guy's interns are into the egg nog. What does the weather have to do with whether a throw-in goes baseline or not?

Are you kidding?

During summer leagues if I'm working a court near an open door every single throw-in is going to be as close to that door as possible.

No wonder you aren't working any college hackey-sack conferences...

Hey! What if I really don't WANT to work those conferences? What if I'm happy staying in the leagues I'm in? (Although, I'll have to admit, 10% of time I think otherwise.)

Oh, btw blewthat - Nevada has the right idea; if you blew the whistle, put it in play along your line.

Now, who's got that egg nog?...

This may be only my fifth week, but I definitely got it goin' on in lawn darts. I can handle it, I just choose not to. Besides, I didn't know they had an Egyptian league - I wouldn't think the sand can hold up the darts long enough to count the points?

Well, you can always come here with the rest of the out of shape officials looking for respect.

Actual term for the boundary lines adjacent with each basket should be called "end line".

I have to disagree - you administer the throw-in at the spot from where you have the best view of the cheerleaders.

Unless you're reffing a game in the . . . wait for it . . . SEC.
