What do you guys think the rule is? This actually happened.

Loose ball on the floor. A1 dives for ball, grabs ball and slides approx. 5 feet with ball (does not roll at all) then since no one else is by lays ball on the floor, stands up and picks up the ball. Is this a violation or is it legal.

Junker Thu Dec 15, 2005 10:08am

Legal as long as the player doesn't stand up WITH the ball.

Nu1 Thu Dec 15, 2005 10:18am

Violation. Case book 4.44.5 Situation B.

A1 can sit up (if on their back), pass, shoot, or start a dribble. If A1 puts the ball on the floor, then stands and is the first to touch the ball it is traveling.

Nu1 is correct, it is a violation. Basically it's because the action is an obvious attempt to circumvent the rule.

I'm sure you are right. That gives me something to look up when I get home. I don't have my books with me. Thanks for setting me straight. Is it a note or exception?

case book 4.44.5 sit B:
It is also traveling if A1 puts the ball on the floor, then rises and is first to touch the ball.
