Situation. Shooting foul on the Red. White shooting. White shooter is bleeding from the knee. I send her off. Coach replaced. Then he had a sub at the table. He said he was sending her in for the shooter (the sub that replaced the original shooter). I looked at my partner and asked him if the original sub had to stay in the game for some running clock. He said no. Coach caught on to what I was questioning and he thought I was right and held off on the sub til next dead ball.

Was I right?

Players who enter the game in NFHS are NOT required to remain in the game for any amount of time. Only players who LEAVE the game are required to remain out for a tick of the clock. 3-3-4

The NBA has a rule that a player who enters must remain in for 1 second on the game clock.

The problem with your situation is that the first substitute for the bleeding player who was due FTs is now required to shoot those FTs. Therefore, this first substitute cannot be removed from the game until those FTs are attempted.

So you were right, but for a different rule. 8-2 is the proper cite.

OK I knew about the leaving (barring a TO in some cases). Thanks.

I believe in NFHS and NCAA, if A1 is injured and A6 replaces A1, A1 shoots the free throws. And after the second free throw was made, A7 could replace A6 and this would be legal.

ART. 4 . . . A player who has been replaced, or directed to leave the game shall not re-enter before the next opportunity to substitute after the clock has been started properly following his/her replacement.

ART. 5 . . . A player who has been injured to the extent that the coach or any other bench personnel is beckoned and/or comes onto the court shall be directed to leave the game, unless a time-out is requested by, and granted to, his/her team and the situation can be corrected by the end of the time-out.

ART. 6 . . . A player who is bleeding, has an open wound, has an excessive amount of blood on his/her uniform, or has blood on his/her person, shall be directed to leave the game, unless a time-out is requested by, and granted to, his/her team and the situation can be corrected by the end of the time-out.

NOTE: (Arts. 5, 6) If players from both teams are directed to leave the game because of injury/blood, both teams must request and be granted a time-out in order to keep each player in the game.

If you change that A1 to A6, you would be correct. ;)

The sub is required to shoot the FTs for the injured player, but doesn't have to remain in the game for any amount of time.
