Can anyone tell me when NCAA changed from quarters to halves and what prompted the change?

I have a feeling they're all looking in their history books for this one. I know it's been halves for as long as I can remember. (Ok, so for me that's through last week.)

Personally I think HIGH SCHOOLs should goto 16 minute HALVES.
