Once again MN is bucking the NFHS in allowing instant replay for both basketball and football. This comes on top of the change made this year to 18 minute halves instead of 8 minute quarters.

always check your fly before entering gym

Kevin Merkil, is having a hard time trusting the officials? Most of Minnesota State Tourney officials are college officials, so they are confortable with instant replay. No big deal!!!

Understand that Wisconsin was watching what MN was going to do....In light of the MN decision on Thursday...Wisconsin may look at using it at the State Tournament only! The facilities they use, UW Kohl Center (boys) and The Alliant Center (girls) both have technical capabilities in place to easily provide this option. It will be interesting to see what the situations/parameters will be in order for officials to refer to the replay.

Correction to the original post. MN is implementing replay in Hockey and Basketball.

You are correct...and I knew it was only BB and hockey but my brain wrote football. Thanks for the correction.

To answer Rainmaker's question, MN went to 3-person for all State Tournament games a couple of years ago. The vast majority of the state is still working 2-person for high school ball. Since college ball is all 3-person and many of the college officials work the required minimum 10 high school games, a lot of the State Tournament officials are in effect college officials who work a little high school. Many others are high school officials who work a little college. The minority is definitely the true high school only official.

I didn't know colleges used IR in BB. And MN is using it only in state semis and finals that are already televised.

Minnesota I.R. can only be used when there is equal circumstances and very controlled surroundings - If it's going to be used in HS, the state tourney is the place. Make it into the reg. season games? Too much money for equipment? Yes, other states will follow. It seems that Minnesota is a ginny pig for changing the rules, smart officials? Tooo coad up-nort......

So far I like the new 18 minute halves. I just moved up here this season and the 18 minute halves have been great so far. First big school game of the season tonight.
