Got my next set of assignments (which are quite lucrative BTW. :) ) But that's not the reason for the thread.
Seems one of my games has some international flavor. A private school team from Melbourne is touring the state and has a game against a local private school. My crew got the game. Two things come to mind. #1, I hope there's no an international incident. #2, I pray we're playing by Fed rules. :D |
Tony,
To help you out on this important international assignment, I Googled some basic imperial to metric conversions and Australian rules and customs. This helpful list should make the Aussies feel right at home in your game. 1. Down under they rigoursly enforce the 1.8288 meters closely guarded rule. 2. The ball may be made of Kangaroo leather; be warned that it has a heckuva bounce to it. It may also have an external pouch for holding a smaller ball of similar material. 3. Be prepared to rotate more frequently at lead as the Melbourne team will be used to driving down the left-hand side of the lane while Americans generally drive on the right. 4. The expression "Fair Dinkum," while containing the word "dink" is not a derogatory expression. 5. The proper Australian term of address for a head coach is "Poofter." You'll want to use it frequently when addressing the coach. 6. If, in the heat of the moment, one of the Aussies throws a stick at you, duck. And stay ducked 'cuz it's coming back. Have a fun game. I've never met an Aussie yet that wasn't mad as a hatter and fun to be around! |

And watch out for the coach with the crocodile boots and the biiiiiiiig knife..... One thing for sure...they ain't gonna be drinking any Fosters after the game. Aussie's generally can't stand it. That's why they send most of it here. |
Lucky you; have done quite a few of the Aussie visiting school teams in NZ. Should be a good game. Don't forget to let us know which team it is....

Since this is their summer, do you have to wear shorts to the game, like any good summer league?

LOL
Will be interested to hear how your game goes. Don't be suprised if you get called a "seppo", and it's NOT a term of endearment :) On the otherside of the equation, I did a game a few years ago, my local high school against a visiting US Junior HIgh team. Australian high schools play without a shot clock - so for the first game they played without one, and the second (the next day) they played with it. That way both teams were confused.... Good luck and let us know if anything amusing happens |
I'm betting there will be at least one play where someone touches the ball in the cylinder after it hits the rim. Legal in FIBA, I think. At least, it used to be.

ATTABOY !
Good goin', Tony.
Have some fun with it. |
Dateline NC - Referee, Tar Heel Tony, causes international incident by ejecting Aussie basketball coach and then referred to him as a bum, not realizing that he's just called him an A@$!
