Exciting varsity contest with the home team undefeated. Game has great intensity and no problems with the coaches. Second half, one of those crazy plays on the baseline where a player is falling out of bounds, throws it off another player, and another player makes a great save to keep the ball alive. No call from me because there is no violation (IÂ’m lead).

As new trail, as soon as I cross in-front of the head coach for the home team, he jumps out of his seat and I am barraged by a string of profanity. I turn to look directly at the coach with his arms outstretched and his mouth open, without delay I hit him with a technical.

Only problem, almost as quickly I realize he did not say anything, it was a fan directly over his shoulder and behind the bench. Still administered the technical and the home team still wins the game (did not affect the outcome).

Curious if anyone can offer alternatives or since the tech has been called, there is nothing that can be done?

FYI: The string of profanity was loud enough that both my partners distinctly heard the curse words used.

You can change it to an "inadvertant whistle"

That's a scary story. Imagine if a good ventrilaquist like Edgar Bergan wanted to affect the outcome of a game? He could sit behind a Coach and have him appear to make comments about the Refs' mothers as they ran by!

I bet it's been tried already in the ACC.......

As soon as you realized that the coach wasn't responsible for the profanity, rescind the "T" on the coach if it hasn't been administered. That's only fair. Go with in inadvertant whistle and give the ball back to the team that had possession when you blew the whistle.

Before you re-start the game, get game management to put the yappy fan in the parking lot.

Talking

I would have probably done the same thing you did...so thanks for braving the waters first. I guess the lesson learned here is that you shouldn't or we shouldn't be so quick to give out T's. I mean you hear the profanity, you know that your going to be able to do something about it either way. I would in the future just turn around, make sure its the coach, tell him to quiet down, and then hit him with the T. The coach knows its coming so it doesn't really matter how fast or slow you administer it. At least now though you are in full control and know if it is all the coach or partly the fans or what.

Yummpin' jimminy, why be so hard on the yappy fan? That's the problem, there's not enough yappiness in the world. I think we should all try to be a little more yappy in our everyday life. (I wonder if the yam on my muffin has started to ferment a little...)

I had the same situation happen to me in a high school game. I had reported a foul, and I heard "That's f***in' terrible!" come from the bench. As I looked over, the head coach was shaking his head, smiling with that sarcastic look, and going to sit down. So I gave the T. He then got this "What did I do?" look on his face. The same one we've seen many times before. So as my partners are administering the free throws, I stay over by the table. He comes up to me rather calmly and tells me he didn't say anything, but it was the guy behind the bench. I haven't worked with this coach before, so I didn't know if he was serious or just yankin' my chain. I just tell him if that's the case, he needs to calm that fan down or it will cost his team directly again. I think if I would've known for sure it wasn't the coach, I might have gone with the inadvertant whistle. But in this case I only had the coach's word for it, and we all know how truthful they can be. (Apologies to the honest ones out there.)

Mr. PotatoHead didn't say anything.

At least mine didn't.

Appologize to the coach for the "T", make it an IW and have game administration remove the fan from the gym. As the fan is getting escorted out, smile and wink (just kidding)!

BIG difference between being yappy and having a profanity laced tirade.

I had this happen once and did T a coach only to figure out later that it was not the coach but a fan right behind him. On a later outburst by the same individual, I realized who it was all along. I apologized to the coach and had the fan removed. Later, several parents of the same team thanked me for removing the guy. Apparently, he's a problem at most games but most officials were just ignoring him.

Thats why its always good to look before pulling the trigger! Its the same with the Timeouts, make sure that its the coach and not a fan or anyone else. Sometimes a little patients can go a long way.

Only if you're a pediatrician.

A little patience can go a long way as well.

(Hey, Mr. Spelling Guy - can I be an intern too?! Huh?! Can I?!)
