The girls basketball team from the home of Mick the Moderator won the Michigan High School State Class C championship yesterday. The Houghton Gremlins from the U.P. beat the heavily-favored Michigan Center team by 50-44.

Mick was quoted as saying "Watching the girls win was almost as much fun as watching a fellow official drive a front-end loader over a 70 foot cliff.

Congratulations go to the home-town lady Gremlins.

A couple of curiosity questions?

Why are they already having their championship?

Is this something that Michagan does for weather purposes?

Is the UP separated from downstate (I know it is physically :-) )

Is it the same for boys or is this a legacy thing like Iowa girls (you know the three on three deal until a few years ago).

Michigan girls play basketball in the fall, at least they do right now. There's currently a lawsuit to make the MHSAA move the girls season to the winter like all the other states.

Michigan tried to have girl's basketball the same time as boy's basketball but the Michigan Supreme Court didn't allow the change. I haven't heard if there is a movement to change the season again.

Well, not just any cliff. It needs to be a snow covered cliff.

#1) Because in Michigan, Girls basketball is a fall sport. However, there is a pending lawsuit that -- depending on the outcome -- could change seasons around.

#2) Nope

#3) It depends, for some of the smaller sports, separate LP and UP championships are conducted.

#4) All rules are the same; only the seasons are different :D

And also..
The volleyball community would like the switch, not so for the basketball community.

Barb,
I caught only a glimpse of a lady working Houghton's 1/4-final in Petoskey.
Who was that blonde?

lukealex,
More correctly, two or three Michigan volleyball moms wanted to change the seasons.

Mick,
Donna C from Posen. A very fine official, as she worked a semi as well this year.

that's a walk Tue Dec 06, 2005 07:12am

lukealex...

Actually the MHSAA pushed the lawsuit all the way to the US Supreme Court. When all of us officials and schools had our plans made out so it would be an easy switch for volleyball to the fall & basketball to the winter, the Supreme Court thru the lawsuit back to the 6th (?) Court of Appeals in Cinncinati(sp). That's where it sits. How long? Anybodys guess. Until we hear anything we continue as we always have. Fall basketball....Winter volleyball...
