Anybody got a case play (even an old one) on this scenario? A1 starts his shooting motion and is fouled by B1. The whistle occurs so closely to the expiration of playing time that the timer cannot stop the clock before the horn sounds. After the horn sounds, A1 completes the shooting motion, releases the try and the ball enters the basket.
I'm positive that the basket does not count and A1 is awarded 2 FTs, but I can't find the relevant case. Anybody know where I've seen it? |
My memory tells me 2 FTs with the lane cleared. No field goal was scored.

NCAA 6-5.1e says that the ball becomes dead when time expires.
6-6.1b says that a live ball shall not become dead until a try in flight ends when time expires. 6-6.2 also implies that the ball becomes dead if time expires before the ball is in flight. Since the try is not in flight, the ball becomes dead immediately. Since the ball is dead, entering the basket is irrelevant. Since we have a foul on a shooter where the try is not successful, award 2 FTs. |
My memory tells me it's case book play 5.6.3SitC.
Didn't even have to look it up. It's true, it's true...... |
Or.... if you don't like that one, try 6.7SitC.
