Varsity girls jamboree last night. Four teams, each played two "games", four "games" in all, each 12 minutes. Three refs to split the work, doing 2-whistle. Two teams that I'd had in fall ball, and it was great to see them. Two other teams that are usually middle of the pack. It was just fun. I made a couple of mistakes, of course, but they weren't huge. It felt good to get my mind back into the game, and start remembering the routine.

Tonight, freshman girls. One school didn't even have a JV team year before last. They're always at the bottom of the pack. This year, they have 10 freshmen, none of whom was hopeless. They didn't play real well, but it was real basketball. It was just plain fun to see that the school is coming back a little, and trying to make things better. THe players had good sportsmanship, there were probably 50 very positive and noisy fans, the table people were cooperative and paid attention. All-in-all I really enjoyed myself, and that was a pleasant surprise!

Just remember, for every one of those games, there's always the game where you have to call 60 fouls because the players just aren't good enough. Or the game where both coaches are whining and the players roll their eyes after every call. Or the game where there's one parent that argues every call against their kid (and their kid's best friend), while yelling for 3 seconds during the tip drill going on under the basket. Or even the game where you come in late and make a grand entrance by tripping over the ball. :D

Some of us forget we're out here because we enjoy doing this. Put a copy of the good games in your memory bank, so you can withdraw a couple of those memories after the bad ones to help you get through them easier.

Yup. and I also put the bad ones in the memory bank so that when I'm at a school where I had a bad one before, and then one turns out good, I can savor the good one even more.

It's all part of living by that old wisdom of the ages, "This too, shall pass." (Why don't we have a smilie for "gag me with a spoon?")

Uh, JR, isn't that the wrong end?

Wouldn't your "bear in the woods" picture be more appropriate? (Ok, the term appropriate being used loosely...)
