Got a interpretation problem. The NCAA rules book, rule 8, Free Throw, For women, it is understood that only 5 (max.) is permitted to occupy the lane spaces. The confusion sets in, is this statement, "Those 5 players are prohibited from MOVING from their original spot to another, even if that spot is not occupied." No mention if the means after or before the administering official hands to ball to the free thrower. Now, would that mean or (interpreted to mean) the spaces closest to the basket must be occupied by the defense, the spaces next to those spaces must be occupied and the 1 remaining space, either side of the lane, must be the one next to the offensive team space(s). This leaves the top 2 spaces closest to the free thrower open and should not be occupied. Little Help Please!! Thanks.

The way this is set up is for only 5 people to be in the lane. They are not allowed to move down. What they mean is that if the offensive team doesn't put anyone in teh 2nd block, the defensive team may not occupy that spot. They may move from spots 3 - 1 or from 1 - 1 or from 3 - 3 but never from odd to even. Hope that helps you.

First two spaces should be occupied by opponent of shooter,
then three more rebounders, anywhere, alternately if they choose, but not required.
There should be any 3 of the remaining 6 spaces unoccupied. Do not count the shooter as one of five allowed.

This is wrong...he is asking about NCAA rules. By rule the opponent's of the shooter cann't be in the #2 slot at all.
