A-1's pass to A-2 in the frontcourt is deflected by A-2 and hits the official who is standing on the division line.A-2 catches the ball in the frontcourt. Official rules this a backcourt violation. Is the official correct?

Confusing to me. Front court status and team control was established. When the ball touched the official who was standing on the division line (which is part of the backcourt) the ball was considered in the backcourt but the ball wasn't touched by team A in the backcourt. Thanks for your replies. I searched!

(Does anybody else have the IAABO Refresher Exam - 2005 ?)

Yes, the official is correct.

1) Team A had team control.
2) The ball had attained FC status.
3) Team A was last to touch the ball before it went into the BC.
4) Team A was first to touch the ball after it went into the BC.

The ball needn't be touched in the backcourt -- it's a violation if A is the first to touch the ball after it's been to the backcourt.

Similarly, the ball needn't be touched in the frontcourt before it goes to the backcourt to have a violation.

confused???

ball in backcourt A1, passed to front court A2, A2 drops ball and goes off of Ref who is on midcourt line(considered back court)???? where does ball go now??? front court back court?? when A2 picks ball up after hitting official they are where?? front court or back court?

J, once the ball hits the official, the ball has backcourt status b/c the official is touching the midcourt line. So it doesn't really matter if the ball itself goes into the frontcourt or the backcourt. A2 touched the ball last before the ball gained backcourt status, so if any player on Team A touches the ball before a Team B player does, it's a violation -- whether that touch occurs in the frontcourt or the backcourt.

4-4-4: "A ball which touches a player or an official is the same as the ball touching the floor at that individual's location."

just for fun!!!! :)

situation: A1 (backcourt) passes to A2 (frontcout), A2 catches ball dribbles ball off of foot and goes towards backcourt, the referee is stradling the mid court line, left foot in front court, right foot in back court...
Question: when A2 dribbles off of foot, it hits referees foot that is in front court and comes back to A2???? Back court violation???? the foot it hit was in the front court so.....????? just asking...

The referee was in the backcourt, so the ball was in the backcourt.

Apply the "player location" definition (4-??) to all persons (iirc, the first part of the definition uses some wording to refer to all, while the subsequent parts only refer to "player" -- I think the subsequent parts should also apply to all)
