Has anyone ever heard of an association discouraging the use of patent leather? I attended a meeting and one of the assigners bascially told everyone they are not to be worn. I always thought patent leather presents a more professional image.

What state is this sanction in? Don't refs in this state "polish" their shoes?

The patent leather just makes it easier overall....just make sure the entire crew wears them!

I have never heard of that. Sounds like your assignor has too much time on his hands. Did anyone ask him what the logic was (or lack thereof) behind his statement? Is he going to outlaw beltless pants too?

Does your local association have a board of directors who this particular assignor reports too? If not, who is his "boss?"

I'd guess his logic is to have all the officials look the same. Those that go patent leather do so for several reasons. Some just want to stand out. I think patent leather could be fine if all officials in an association have them but the avaialbility of brands/styles is too low to get a good fit for everyone. Non-patent leather shoes come in a lot more varieties.

Officials will never look exactly the same. Some are taller, some are shorter, some are skinny, some are bigger. So long as they all wear a regulation uniform and everything is clean and professional, who freakin' cares? (well, other than this assignor with too much time on his hands) I have both patent leather and non-patent shoes. I don't call my partners to make sure we all have the same shiny-ness to our shoes or that we are all wearing beltless pants or whatever. Just plain silly.

I love my patent leather shoes. I could never get the other kind shiny enough. Yeah, the crew's shoes might not be of identical shininess, but that's true even without patent leather.

Plus, if I kick a call, people might be blinded by the reflection off the leather. That helps.

Agree. If they shoes are so different as to stand out its not really a "uniform". I don't think it a big deal, just offering a possiblity for what that assignor might be thinking.

IREFU2 Thu Oct 13, 2005 08:04am

I love my PL shoes and the crowd has commented several times on how they looked. It make the official look overal good.

Jurassic Referee Thu Oct 13, 2005 08:23am

I'm an assignor. My main concern is whether an official can do the job out there. Yup, I want the officials to be neat, clean, uniformly dressed and presentable, but I really don't care if they wear clown shoes as long as those shoes are clean and some shade of black.

To be quite honest, I've never thought that having a little white somewhere on the shoe made any kind of a difference either. Big whoop!

I think that this is a case of an assignor putting in some stoopid rule just because he can. Having said that, even though what he's doing is laughable, you'd better think about following his directive if you want to get games from him-- as long as he has the power.

Reminds me of the Dilbert strip where the boss is standing behind him telling him which buttons to push. Dilbert pushes one in error and the boss exclaims "No! You fool!". Everyone else can see that the boss is a real moron, but he is still the boss.

The shoes are acceptable....the laces do have to be black though.

Hey, I got a pair just like that. They're Air Bozos.

Texas Aggie Fri Oct 14, 2005 10:34am

Way back when, I gave a dress talk for mainly first year officials at a chapter meeting. We did it at a meeting where everyone was there so (hopefully) the guys that still had been around for a while would eventually get the message, as some of them had bad dressing habits.

Anyway, I've never been a big shiny shoes guy. Clean and even polished, yes. Shined to the point of being able to shave in their reflection? No. However, I knew plenty of guys that were that way, and that's fine. One game I had in a 3 man crew, one of the guys had used that spray shine on his shoes so much, for some reason, when he pulled them out of the bag to get dressed, they were stuck together! We pulled on them for a minute or so and LUCKILY got them apart without damage. So, if the PL solves that one problem that occurs once every hundred thousand or so man games, I'm all for it!

I strongly recommended beltless slacks. Mainly because there is a better consistency among the makers of black beltless slacks than there is for belt loops. But, I know some guys like belts or feel more comfortable in them. Nowadays, microfiber golf slacks are available with belt loops only, so guys that want lighter pants are forced to wear them. The only thing that MUST be insisted upon is to NOT wear a PL belt with black slacks. Any other color is fine, but black slacks need a dull finished belt so it doesn't show up well.

Me thinks you just put yourself into that category of "officials who have too much time on their hands and worry about minutia."

Because I've worked for big companies so long that I've become sensitized.

Plus, I'm very careful about the word "fat". My wife and I had to teach our 3-year old son (he was 2 at the time) that "fat" was a bad word after he called my somewhat rotund mother-in-law "fat" (he didn't know any better at the time). So now whenever he hears anyone say that word he says, "we don't say fat!" :)

I would've paid good money to see that.

I have a bad habit of chastizing myself verbally when I do something dumb. Hit a bad golf shot: "Jeez, Chuck, you suck!". Lock the keys in the car: "I am such an idiot!" Stuff like that. One day, when my daughter was about 2ish, I took her upstairs for her nap, but left her blanket downstairs. I told her I had to go back and get it and she says (of course), "Daddy, you a idiot."

Couldn't get mad at her. She was right!

Hey I am in the army. We wear Poromeric- It is a shiny high gloss breathable material.... Patent leather is hot and sticky. Tell them you checked it out and your not wearing patent leather and see how it goes over...

Good Luck

>>Me thinks you just put yourself into that category of "officials who have too much time on their hands<<

Most people would choke on my schedule.

The reason I made the comment is I bought a PL belt for football, which it works OK for (not for me, though, but that's a different story). When I looked at it next to black pants, it stood out too much. All together, the analysis took about 15-30 seconds (if that), hardly something indicative of "too much time on my hands." I added the statement in case someone was considering such a purchase for basketball, instead of football or baseball.

26 Year Gap Fri Oct 21, 2005 09:57pm

I like the patent leathers. Now in my third season with my first pair. They get more comfortable each season. Of course, the three inch heels have worn down some....

Actually, IMHO they make it look like you're too lazy to shine your shoes. They also go well with toupees.
