For those of you interested in my ongoing saga, I had elective achilles debridement surgery (basically a "clean-out" of scar tissue and tissue removal of a "hot spot" on an inflamed achilles that has been bothering me for years) on the day after last season ended.
Well, I know that some weekend games aren't the same as the pounding of mid-season, but it's encouraging so far. I've been reffing a boys varsity league the last few weekends (two games in a row max for me right now) and I've been completely pain-free so far. After hurting for the past 5 years, this is very encouraging (especially not limping on the morning after a fast game). It was a frustrating summer (no running - just lots of biking and my golf game actually got decent), but definitely worth it so far. I can even wear normal shoes now without having to find a pair that doesn't rub my achilles in the painful spot. Thanks, Z |
Am I the only one that thought debridement surgery had to do with getting rid of a woman in a white dress?
Anyway, good to hear it's going well so far. I've known a couple of people that have had achilles problems, and they tell me it can be painful. I have even heard one pop on the basketball court, and it wasn't a pretty sight when I saw his foot just hanging limp when they picked him up off the floor. (Am I helping any?) Hearing about surgery sucess stories never grows old. Especially as I get older and are more likely to have them myself. |

Hey, Z - you mentioned your golf game got decent after the surgery. I might consider having the surgery if it'll help my game. ;) Do you walk or ride? I'd be curious if the walking helped you out at all, instead of running? |
Glad to hear it Z...might have to contact you for more info as my achilles has been bugging me quite a bit the last year or so!

Actually, walking a bunch of golf courses this summer seemed to be real good therapy for my achilles. Not enough to stress it, but kept it active. My doc actually didn't endorse golf as part of my rehab (he thought the twisting might put a little stress on the achilles), but I would have had to check into the mental hospital if I didn't do something! Broke 80 a few times this summer (never did that before). Z |
Broke 80 a few times this summer (never did that before). Because you were consentrating on your foot and not the golf game. Good job |
Breaking 80 is quite an accomplishment. BTW, what did you score on the back 9? :D
