One of our officials was assaulted last night
during a men's rec league game and has contacted the police.

Can anyone tell me about CA law as it pertains
to the type of offense and the penalties?

I think down there, they usually just hang em.

BTW Barry, on your website under "Most Misunderstood Rules", you state players may enter the lane on the release of a free throw. Is this a rec rule you guys use down there?

Also, just to be nit-picky, you use the term "call" a timeout for coaches and/or players a few times. You do use the correct "request" once.

Also BTW - I hope the guy who assaulted the ref gets sent to a place where he can practice being someone's girlfriend.

#1 first responder: you're an A-Hole.

#2 website was created by someone else using old info.
All errors will be cleaned up....... and yes we do
mostly adult rec using NCAA rules. "Request" will be used
with regards to timeouts.

As long as we're picking on those misunderstood rules from his page, #27 says that "A referee can make up to three separate 5 second counts (hold, dribble, hold.)

I hope this is one that you're going to fix, cause if I get to 5 on either of the first hold or dribble, I'm blowing the whistle.

Check on #39 too, cause I'm pretty sure that hanging on the rim is a direct technical.

Barry, apparently California does have a law related to assaults on sports officials. Here's a link from the NASO website that gives you some info on the law- just scroll down to California:

Please make sure that your official follows through with his complaint, if possible. No official in any sport anywhere deserves that crap.

We're genuinely saddened that we have failed to live up to your highest expectations. I don't know if you're aware of it or not, but the vast majority of us actually re-read our posts before submitting them and ask ourselves several critical questions. The most important of which is this: Is this post going to be insightful and helpful to bossref? Or will it just be more crap?

As for the others, well they are a tiny minority and just don't understand how important your needs really are in the universal scheme of things. Their ignorance is surely punishment enough, don't you think?

You might consider reviewing a thread tmp44 (?) posted about an assault case in PA. I don't remember the title of the post, however the outcome was certainly a joke. Hopefully your situation comes out different.

Why special rules for refs?

Assault is assault, right? Ref, little old lady, guy next door, if someone assaults them, then they should be prosecuted fully and basically to the same extent.

I am curious, do the laws increase the penalty or decrease it when a ref is involved.

Well no, assault is not assault.

There already exist 'special rules' pertaining to certain groups or acts under certain circumstances.

The little old lady or the guy next door is not faced with making a decision to do a job that might increase their risk of being assaulted over normal day-to-day life.

There are many groups of people that place themselves in positions of potential harm in the process of doing a service to others that is deemed valuable. Referees are one of them (in addition to police, firefighters, etc). Authorities in some states recognize that referees are placed in controversial situations and are exposed to an increased potential for attack everytime they step on the floor. The nature of the job, sports in general, and some fan personalities creates intense animosity.
