Watching a HS Boys Varsity game yesterday and witnessed this situation:
A1 shoots, while the shot is in the air, B2 fouls A2. Shot goes in. It is a one-and-one bonus situation The question, how many shots does A2 receive? Virtually everyone in the gym thought it should be a 1and1 situation for A2. The calling official insisted that it was 1 shot for A2. He called the foul, and prevailed in the discussion. They shot 1. Did they get it right? |
"Virtually everyone" was right.
The only time you award one shot for a foul in NFHS is when the SHOOTER is fouled in the act of shooting and makes the shot (or in certain multiple foul situations). If a teammate of the shooter is fouled, he/she is entitled to recieve the free throws merited for that foul (or the team will that just scored will get the ball back).
