In our board [different state, different board] appearance does count in ratings but there are other things, too. One guy who started a couple of years ago when I started again is probably where I am in terms of calling games, but he is always late, so pre-games are a joke, chatting with his wife on his cell phone at halftime, outta the gym before opening tap for the varsity game, and pretty full of himself. Even when we were doing one of our few JV 3 man crews and a pre-game was even more important, he was late. Didn't change in the off-season as he had a chance to work with some varsity guys in AAU. He is his own worst enemy & doesn't even know it.

I'm pretty sure he'd be dead with a cholesterol count that high. Point well taken, though.

So, Shakespear was right!

While I agree about killing all the lawyers first, what does that have to do with anything in this thread?

Seriously, though, I have quite a few too many pounds myself, and I realize that that will hurt me as I try to start & advance (both in terms of appearance and of fitness - especially when I start football). I do think, however, that officiating is a good motivator for me to get back into shape.

I like the exercise, the fact that I can be close to the game and when I consider the alternative is rec league ball, I am more and more convinced I have made the right choice.

I'd say it's important for all of us regardless of the sport. Obviously, running the center on a 110yd x 60yd or larger field or even being an AR and spending a lot of time in a full sprint due to team running a pushed up offisde trap is different than working an 84' x 50' foot floor, but both have their own special physical demands. I for one decided that I didn't like the looks of the person staring back at me in the mirror and it was time to do something about it. I'm 46. I'm not going to out run the 17 - 18 year olds, but I have to do all I can to keep it respectable.
