I am going to be working the semi-finals of an over 30 league on April fools day. I was wondering if any of you witty forum members have any April fools jokes I can use on these guys, before or after the games. Thanks in advance.

A fake toss is always good for a few smiles. :)

(1) Go to a novelty store and buy a pair of those glasses that are like two miles thick, but are just glass (ie. they don't distort your vision - you don't want to damage yourself).

(2) Maybe walk in with a cane, or a fake leg cast.

(3) Through a football flag for the first foul... then say "oops... wrong sport."

(4) If you have a friend that works for PBS/local TV, have him/her come in as if the game is televised.

..Mike

That's great!
How about the first time the coach says ANYTHING AT ALL... "WHACK" :)

Tim Roden Fri Mar 30, 2001 12:07pm

A blind man's cane.

Throw a flag at the first foul.

An umpire's mask and chest protector.

If it were me, The fake toss is as far as I would go.

Tim-

I don't have what Brian calls "the onions" to do any of them. But it's been fun to think about it!!

Brian Watson Fri Mar 30, 2001 12:25pm

There is much history behind the onions.

As Gallagher would say..."Just to be funny"....

(1) Fake toss is good, or you could drop or bounce it downwards instead of toss,
(2) flag is good...how about soccer ref cards...flash a red or yellow card on a foul
(3) get a player to hand you some money when you make a call on the other guys,
(4) exagerate you mechanics and invent new ones,..maybe hand out a "bus pass" for a travel call, call a foul like "assault and battery on 32", "molesting", "offense touching",
(5) when they complain about a call yell out, "Hey, I'm blind not def."
(6) have a ball with no air in it to switch on a time out or throw in (a la Globe Trotters)
(7) wear different color socks or hike up your pants (like Erkel), a wig, make up (if you're Benny Hill...lol)
Have fun....and remember...
If you think no one cares that you're alive, try missing a cr payment.

Art N Sat Mar 31, 2001 10:39am

I just had another...
How about when you call a foul...you throw out a rubber chicken?
See that's funny because a chicken is a fowl...blah blah blah

Or hand out some deoderant for a foul smell.

I've lost it haven't I? Here comes the wagon and the guys with my new white jacket...

So, Suppref -- Tell us what you did!!! and how it was received...

Brian Watson Mon Apr 02, 2001 11:18am

I used my sunglasses and the antenna from a volleyball net to try the old I'm blind trick. I think only the coaches got it.

Suppref Mon Apr 02, 2001 12:09pm

It was great!!!

Most of the guys were receptive to April Fools day.
First I walked in on crutches. Then I borrowed Football pants and a white hat. I used the fake toss for the jump ball:). On the first foul call I threw the yellow flag at the offender, hit him right in the ..."package". He threatened to sue the league:). The best thing was as the trail, the defense made a steal and on the fastbreak with noone within 30 feet of him, the shooter missed the layup, so I blew the whistle and called a foul on Claude Raines:) (he was the invisible man in the old black and white movies). It was really refreshing to get away from all the seriousness for a day. But it only worked because the players were receptive to a joke, even though it was semi finals. BTW there was very little crying from the players. One guy shouted at me and I used the "I'm blind not deaf" line:) Thanks for all your suggestions it was alot of fun!!!

Did anyone understand this besides the grandfathers and grandmothers in the stands?

Even though this is an over 30 league there are a number of guys close to,or over 40. They thought it was funny.

And yes, I've been known to do some "sick puppy" things in my day. I just try to have some fun every day, After all the bad things that happen to people, myself included, I try to go through each day with the glass half full (as long as it's not half full of single malt scotch!:) )
