I have been watching with amazement(NCAA Tourney) all the players lining up for a free throw and standing on or into the next player's box on free throws. Is this not a lane violation? If not , why do they paint the boxes on the lane? Just stand where you want. Please clear this officials mind.Is Fed different?

Thanks!!!

bake17,
Relax. That's legal in NCAA. And, yes, Fed is different.

Denny,
Correct.
I may be wrong, but it seems Women have been doing it for two years, maybe three. Not sure about Men..., maybe one year one way or the other from Women.

Lane Violation During FT's

As a high-school official, the thing I noticed most about games during March Madness was how quickly the jumpers enter the paint during free throws. Based on what I'm seening, I'm sure the college rules must allow jumpers to enter the paint as soon as the FT is released.

But what I wonder about are the times jumpers have clearly stepped ONTO the paint BEFORE the ball leaves the shooters hands. It never seems to be called.

Yup.

I find that moving before hitting the rim is rarely called in HS, and agree with you about college.
