You need to look at the shot again, because I saw something entirely different. As George Michael says, "Let's go to the videotape" - okay, well...at least a photo:

As you can see, Sparks hasn't left the floor yet and is actually manuevering to get the shot off. He is clearly moving to his left and Torbert is moving into him. I've seen the shot from head-on in slow-motion, and it's even more apparent than this still photo. At the moment this picture was snapped, Torbert has just landed and bumped Sparks.

I don't mean to split hairs, and I don't mean to raise a stink – I just think an objective viewer (official or not) would recognize that if this shot was taken at any other time during the game, and the contact were the same, the officials would've called it.

So wrong!

huto - "He is clearly moving to his left and Torbert is moving into him."

Sparks jumped to his right trying to draw contact, as
Torbert tried to avoid. All the momentum in this picture is going toward the right, the direction initiated by Sparks moving to his right.

No, you're wrong.

What you're seeing is this:

Sparks goes up for the shot, and Torbert has already bumped him below the hip. Thus, Sparks lower half has shifted to the left - giving the appearance that he's 'moving' right. Find the video for yourself and watch it from straight on.

You guys are arguing about who is moving where by looking at still photos.

Thanks for the laugh.

huto Wed Apr 13, 2005 09:25pm

yep - funny

You're right. I'm guilty for starting it!

If UK wouldn't have squandered the final minute of the first overtime and actually gotten a shot off, perhaps they would've gone to St. Louis. No matter - UNC would've made mincemeat of them.

I live in Raleigh (and root for NC State), so I saw almost every game UNC played, and they would've beaten anyone last Monday night.

Overall, great tournament – especially all of the regional finals.

This argument is over for me – to which some say 'good riddance'.

No. That's what you are seeing not me. ;)
The video? Been there done that.

Sparks tried to jump into Torbert. The camera angle you saw, I'll bet, was from the endline, away from Torbert and toward the corner.
You got a skewed view of the direction.
Sparks' legs do not come up "square" and moving toward the right with the contact you are wishing.

Torbert started in front of Sparks (legs down your picture) and ended up behind Sparks (legs aquared my picture). No contact, just silk on silk. Sparks' shorts would have been wrinkled and Sparks would have been on the floor if it happened as you say. :)

That's not true, Sparky.
I clearly saw both pictures spinning.

Funny I saw a Mich St. defender with LGP trying to avoid contact and I also saw a toe on the 3 point line.

You want to argue about a missed call, it was giving you the 3 in the first place.;)

Hey, this guy isn't as dumb as I first thought. :D

huto, not all contact is a foul. The defender is clearly not attempting to defend or alter the shot. He's attempting to avoid the contact. The contact didn't have a negative effect on the shot.

This isn't a foul.

They never beat Northwestern last year.

BktBallRef Wed Apr 13, 2005 10:46pm

Hmmm...does Northwestern have a basketball team?

In any case, we did beat the #1, #2, and #3 teams from the Big 10 plus another school from Bloomington, IN. :)

BTW, did you see Miss USA? WOW! What a babe!

this was clearly not a foul and an excellent no call by Burr and Whitehead. Sparks clearly tried to initiate the contact, which Torbert was trying to avoid.

If you like teeth...

Are you implying that most Tar Heels don't have teeth? :D
