Hi Guys and girls
I need clarification on the 3 second rule.

let said B1 has the ball outside. B4 is in the paint.
I am counting 1 ..... 2..... B1 shoot the ball the 3 second cound stop. OK. I got all that.
Now the case is that the Shoot is miss, B4 get the rebound and shoot, miss, B4 or B3 get rebound and miss get rebound and miss and so on. if B team get the ball when does the 3 second continue or the 3 sec count start over?????


I was refering a rec game over the weekend and that happen to me. after 3 or 4 rebound and miss of the same team I twit the whisle and call 3 second. I thought they were to long in the paint.

The coach got mad but is ok. we talked on the next time out and he mention that the 3 sec count stop on every shoot though he though. I said I will look into it. everything ok after that.

So. looking into the book I did not find any specification on stoping the count on very shoot.

Can someone advise? or refer me to the right page or rule and art.? please.

You stated yourself that you stopped the count when the first shot was taken.

So why wouldn't you stop when the next shot was taken?

It doesn't matter how many shots are taken. A new count starts every time the offense rebounds the ball in their front court.

The three second count ends when a shot is taken. Period. Doesn't matter how many seconds they're in the paint when the play is shoot, rebound, shoot, rebound, etc. THere are enough other things to think about during this kind of action, that it's definitely a blessing to be able to let 3-seconds go!

HUH? He got it wrong.

Ruberia, with that many shots and misses, you do not have to worry about 3 seconds but watch for a push foul on the rebounds or a hack on the shots.

I will do that from know on. reset my count on every shoot. and look for push and hack etc.

By the way, I often hear coaches call for a 3-seconds violation because the shot "didn't touch the rim". It is not the same ruling as for the shot clock, where the ball has to hit the rim for the clock to be reset.

Just to be annoyingly, pedantically clear: In the situation you describe, the three-secound count is suspended or ignored when a player in the paint with the ball "dribbles in or moves immediately to try for goal." The count ends entirely when a shot is released. The count does not begin again until it is in team control again, and then it starts with 1 again.

So in a case like yours, the count ends with the shot, and begins anew only when a player from that team secures a rebound. It then ends again when a shot is taken. Ad nauseum.
