Think this alternate shirt can be an "option" for all HS officials in ALL states?
wl |
Hopefully not.
YUCK! |
I saw that they wore them in FL for their state finals. I agree with Tony. Yuck.
|
It just looks strange to me. I don't really know what to make of it. I think that it looks really old-fashinoned for some reason. I was initially intrigued by the grey shirt, but after seeing it tonight, I say stick with the stripes. To quote someone else, "I'd rather be a zebra than a jacka$$."

I bet "the officials choices" of the world really like them...$$$.
I don't mind the shirts, but the plain old stripes are just fine with me. |

I'm not impressed with them either. Just caught the last part of the 2nd half, but did notice a lot of the players were wearing wrist bands -- the black/yellow/red rubber ones that are popular these days. During a timeout in the last last minute or so I noticed a kid with a bandaid on his ear. Looked like it was covering an ear stud. He was the one that keeping sticking his face in the camera.

I work in an area where we wear grey shirts often. They don't look bad at all. The main problem with grey shirts is different manufacturers make slightly different shades of grey. IMO, about 75% of the officials that I've seen during my career wear shirts that are at least one size too big. This is done for various reasons (wink) but it causes grey and stripes to look sloppy. I think that was the case more than anything else last night. I just had a funny visual; an official with a shirt that is too big and some coach's shorts on during the summer! :D "Uh, yeah, we're going to have a problem with that." |
We wear the gray pinstriped shirts in a JUCO league I work in. I prefer the stripes.
|
I wear the gray shirts in a JUCO league myself. It really does not make that much difference to me one way or another. I will say this about the grey shirts. I like the feel of those shirts when you wear them. The gray shirts are not as heavy and are much cooler.
Peace |
We in California made them optional 3 years ago. However the National Federation won't listen to California--we don't have an official rep since we don't follow all fed guidelines.....basically having a shot clock in both boys and girls since this is the 21st century, and they nixed it and won't listen to reason. They are much better material and I think look sharper...assuming they are tapered properly.

do they show sweat spots thru them?
|
I wouldn't mind them just for a change every now and then. But, I like the stripes over the grey.
|
The officials at our state tournament wore them and I think they look sharp. My wife thought so as well. Rumor is that my state (WA) is going to make it optional for the associations to adopt them. No complaints from me. Peace.

Greys look better on film.
Greys do show sweat spots a little. Whites are more durable. AAR |
SocalRef-
Does CA really have a shot clock for boys and girls? If that is true, then perhaps it is time for the rest of the country to follow the lead of California for a change. Ridiculous taxes, bad business laws, crazy energy regulations. . .but a shot clock for high school basketball could make it a desirable place for me. |
We have them as an alternate in Vermont. I like them and probably wore them about 1/3 of the time. They were used in the tournament in 2004 as an experiment. I've seen some guys wear them one game and zebras the next.
A favorite trick among 3 man crews is to have the crew chief say they are going with stripes and when one guy goes into the bathroom the other 2 don the gray [with stripes] real quick and get their jackets on. They let the other guy get ready and then they unzip the jackets just before it is time to head out. |

We only have a shot clock in the girls game...I wish they would put the boys on one also. The game needs it bad IMHO. Peace.

If the entire country went to grey shirts I don't even think we would be worrying about it. The main issue with the grey shirts are they show sweat and the manufacturers need to all have the same color.
|
Sweat?
Don't any of you guys wear t-shirts when reffing? What's all this talk about sweat showing? The only time it's a problem is going shirtless underneath.

I am a real "perspirer" and have worn the "micro-softer" mesh gray shirt without "sweatshow". I wear the McDavid Hdc Compression V-Neck shirt underneath and remain "cool & comfy"! wl |
I wasn't speaking for myself. I wear Underarmour or Nike compression underneath. I thought about this because Donnee Gray is the JUCO assigner for Maryland and he specifically told everyone to bring two shirts so you can change at halftime if sweat is showing. I don't have to change but my partner forgot his shirt my first game last season and we are about the same size. :D
|
JL....
Straight from the WOA Commissioner's mouth......Association are approved to wear the next year......Both officials must have the same shirt...... For the others.........At the Washington State Tourney this last year each official was given one with our state patch embroidered on them.......The comments I heard were all positive........ |
Thanks Ron...I'll amke sure my partner has one : ) Peace.

H.S. shot clock: yuck
gray officiating shirts: who cares MTD, Sr. |
I'll say it once again, just as I did on another post, I'd rather be a zebra than a jack ***!" And no one has ever said how they will look with the fishnets.(LOL)

Grey shirts look much better...more professional. I heard Guthrie wants the NCAA to OK them and use them in the SEC. He called those who don't want to change "helmet heads". I wish they get rid of the pin stripes and just have a grey shirt with a black vent/stripe under the arms...NBA style. I like the B/W stiped shirts with the solid black vent too. |

I really liked the look of the gray shirt with the black sleeves in the second block/charge/blarge video. I wonder what league that is, and would they pay travel? :D

And if we were wearing grey and NBA were wearing black/white as we do now, the same group of people would be clamoring for black/white in NCAA and HS. [/B][/QUOTE] It's just a shirt...either you like it or you don't. Doesn't affect the game or the quality of the official. |
I remember the predecessor to the zebra when I was a board official the first time. We use the gray as an alternate here. Some guys like 'em. Some guys don't. Fans & coaches have complimented them. But what the heck do THEY know? ;)

Yes, I have officiated games using a shot clock. I have 31 years experience officiating games using a shot clock: 31 years as a women's college basketball official, 12 years of officiating men's college game, and I have officiated six AAU girls' and one AAU women's national championship tournaments. I have also been a USA Basketball Referee for 13 years. As an official I could care less whether that game is played using a shot clock or not, I just do not like it from a personal perspective. Heck, the NBA cannot even average 100 points a game with a shot clock. MTD, Sr. |
I know this thread is already long enough, but...
One of the officials of the McD's game had sweat showing on his chest. That looked terrible. I'm not a sweater, and I weat the McDavid shirt too, but my partner may be a sweater and go without the undershirt. If that's the case, he'll make both of us look bad. If we all go to NBA grey, they'll go to black and white and call it retro. |

I agree. I might like it if I get the chance to work with one. But I hope I don't run into it at the high school level.

proref27, You gotta be kidding me. Haven't you ever seen a less talented team stay in a game and even come out on top by taking the air out of the ball against a run and gun team? That's part of the beauty of high school ball. We haven't turned it into a scorefest. And, when you think about it, to run a four corner stall actually requires a team to be able to dribble, pass, and cut to the ball -- you know, fundamental skills that seem to be lacking everywhere we look today. |
Retro would be that bowtie thing like in Hoosiers.
