Please confirm: on a backcourt violation where the offensive team recovers the ball all the way back under the opposing team's basket, the ensuing throw in would be at the baseline, correct? Partner believed that all backcourt violations are thrown in at midcourt. I say it's where the ball is when the violation is called.

The throw-in ocurs at the closest out-of-bounds spot to where the violation occurred. Rules reference is NFHS rule 7-5-2.

Your partner was wrong. Had a couple of these last year. On a violation, the ball is always taken out at the spot nearest the violation. On a backcourt violation, the violation occurs when the offensive player becomes the first to touch the ball after it went into the backcourt, not when the ball went into the backcourt.

Ditto to what these last two guys said.
