Reading over my rule book I came across this:

4-43 art. 3: After coming to a stop and establishing a pivot foot: a) The pivot foot MAY BE LIFTED, but not returned to the floor, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal.

Am I confusing something? So I can raise my pivot foot and I'm okay unless I bring it back to the floor? I thought that was traveling...wow I'm really feeling stupid.

If you couldn't, how could anybody shoot a jump shot?

Please note that this only applies to a shot or pass. If they lift that pivot and then dribble, violation.

Visualize this play: Player receives the ball in the post. Turns to the basket and jumps, both feet off the floor, but in mid-air realizes he is going to be blocked. Rather then release a shot then, and without the defender touching the ball, he throws the ball to the floor and begins to dribble. Violation.

Or...player received a pass out on the wing. He gets a "quick first step" and blows by the defender, but doesn't get the dribble off before his pivot foot leaves the floor. Tweet.

Okay...my fault. I wasn't visualizing this properly, thanks for the clarification.

Good Lord! Sometimes something so simple can seem so complex when reading that book! I'll conquer it...one day! :) Thanks again all,

That's where I was confused...thanks again.

When the player catches the ball with both feet on the floor, that's about the only scenario I can think of.

You've never seen my jump shot, have you Chuck?

A player can actually lift one foot off the floor, but the only option after that is to shoot or pass it. If he returns the said foot back to the floor, its a travel.

Your jump shot is what used to be called a set shot :)

Nope. But he can request one. :D (That's not really my crusade, but I thought I'd jump in before Padgett.)

OK, now you've done it, the gloves are off!! (Friday afternoon, no game to run to...)

What, exactly does a player do when he requests a timeout from one authorized to grant said timeout? He exclaims in a loud, clear voice, "timeout!". And what's a word that denotes exclaiming in a loud clear voice?

hint: it rhymes with 'small'.

He is calling for (i.e., requesting) a timeout. If he had actually called a timeout, the clock would have stopped.

As I said, this isn't my crusade. I don't care, but I can see Padgett's point.

BTW, I'm beating you in the brackets :D

Yeah yeah yeah, half the planet's beating me in the brackets. If that punk from Creighton was born with opposable thumbs, both eyes and a brain reasonably equipped to coordinate them I would be ahead of you in the brackets.

But I aint worried. You have UNC - as Howard Cosell might call - going. all. the. way.

We've all had a tired, rusty old heap of junk car that you knew would always turn right over when you put the key in the ignition, no matter how beat up, worn & ugly it got. That car that you never washed because, hell, it wouldn't have made a bit of difference but still was so dependable every single time you turned that key it would shock the sh1t out of you that it managed kick right over without any hesitation whatsoever yet one more time...well, my friend...

Hmmm, I have to say I always imagined him looking more like that well endowed squirrel. But maybe he does look more like a rusty motor-car. :D

I like the squirrel better. :D

How could a pivot player make a Drop-Step Move? How could Kevin McHale score 15,000 points?

I once watched a Coach with 30 years of experience teach the Drop Step at a Clinic and it was traveling every time. He taught the kids to pick up their pivot foot and return it to the floor.....
