Duketownie,
The point is that the distance is only for the purpose of the case play. 10 feet is just an arbitrary distance set by a writer, not by the rules committee.
Note the rule states that A1 is responsible for the contact in situation b because once A1 gets the ball, he is no longer entitled to the distance he would have been entitled to without the ball. Therefore, A1 is responsible for the contact if B1 is in position before A1 leaves the floor last prior to contact.
The rule is clear, time and distance are not relevant with a player control foul. Time and distance are relevant with regard to blind screens (B1 taking position against A1 without the ball).

The situation: A fastbreak. An offensive player who's running hard upcourt catches the outlet pass in the midcourt area. However, a defender plants herself in the area where the offensive player will take her first step after catching the pass. So, of course, the offensive player, whose head is naturally turned back downcourt in order to catch the pass, crashes into the planted defender after making the catch and either travelling or, worse, a charge is called on the offensive player.

Correct call? Or should it be a blocking foul on the defender for not giving the offensive player a fair chance to avoid contact (like a step and a half)?

See Case book play 10.6.1 Situation B.

Probably doesn't have a case book, z. Sounds like a fan.

Worse yet? A Duke fan?

Just hold on there a cotton-picking minute Miss Juulie! Don't be cracking on a Duke fan. Remember, jealousy is such a petty emotion.:D

Personally, I couldn't care less about Duke, assuming we're talking about the men's team here. But I'm pretty sure that BBR isn't a Duke fan, so I was just pointing out that aspect of things.

Tony's a Tar Heel fan. Duke fans don't recognize Tar Heel fans. :D
