I'm a 3 sport official, B'ball, Soccer, and V'ball. I'm always checking the other sports, but on this forum B'ball has 125,565 posts, Soccer has 482, and Volleyball has 591. I'd like to "talk shop" with refs in the other two, but there isn't much activity. Why do you think we basketball officials talk so much more than officials in other sports? What say you?

There's a lot of discussion in football but most of it is on McGriff.

Also, there are probably more basketball games played than any of the other sports. Therefore, there are more officials, which leads to more posters.

Maybe it's related to the fact that it's "basketball" season? ;)

How many mechanics does volleyball have? 5?

How many rules does volleyball have? 8?

But then again, I like volleyball. Not as much as curling though.

I think it's a reflection of the personality you have to have to be a basketball official. We are the most demonstrative and forceful with calls of any officials and that carries over to our desire to discuss our sport.

Which is just a long-winded euphemism for, "We like to run our mouths..."

Basketball officials can work 12 months out of the year. I do not know if that is the case in the other sports. At least not with the same intensity.

Not only that, other officials don't have to discuss things like patent leather and belts.

Different sports may be more active on other site's forums. Someone mentioned McGriff...used to be decent for basketball but too many people turned in to an insult and flame war board.

Because we have so much more to learn :D

Basketball is more popular, therefore more people like to talk about basketball.

Nah! I rarely ever speak when I'm typing a post. :)

I think we "talk" more because in basketball, there are so many situations that require one to use his/her judgement in applying the "spirit and intent" of the rules. Basketball, unlike football, has so many areas that require a split second decision and you just can't "wave it off".
