I was in the stands for this. A1 is the second of two free throws. After the official gives him the ball, the table (in error) blows the horn for a sub. The player has not yet started his motion. The officials ignore horn and A1 makes the shot. After the sub is brought in and as team B (the home team) is bring the ball up the floor A2 is SCREAMING at the clock operator You cant do that while he is ! Thats the fourth time tonight (it wasnt the fourth time) He continued to yell for about 10 seconds while B1 was bring the ball up. Keeping in mind that the table crew is part of the officiating crew, how would you handle this? The officials just ignored him.

I would ignore him too. |
I'd say a WHACK!!! is in order. The guy is screaming at your table crew. An extension of the officiating crew. Would you take his crap if he was yelling at you instead??
|
Ignore him. Unless that "!" is a cuss word! :)

I don't think I would ignore this.

I'd tell him to shutup, don't mess with my crew.

The table wouldn't have heard A2 anyway...
because I would have out "screamed" him. ;) |
From this side of the table? I'd look at him like he had three heads. He's got better things to worry about, like his man blowing by him unguarded.
What did his coach do, if anything? |

I've never seen this from a player but. . .if I am there and I see it, I would probably try to speak to the player first. Let him know that he shouldn't talk to the table, and tell him that is enough. Ignoring him is a bad idea. Especially if he is standing there for any length of time. While I know that table personnel is part of the officiating crew, the player also has a legitimate gripe. The table IS NOT supposed to do that. As long as he is not being inappropriate or making a big scene, I think that verbal communication to the player can do the trick. I would also make sure that either myself or a partner goes to the table and instructs them not to do that. If that is done as soon as the mistake is made, perhaps the situation with the frustrated player can avoided.

Uh, WHACK. If it happened like gostars said it did, this deserves a T. [Edited by canuckrefguy on Feb 27th, 2005 at 11:11 PM] |
I'd tell him to be quiet and if he keeps it up, I'd deal with it with a T.

Canuck,
I'll stick by my previous statement, if something is done about it when it happens, then the whole player incident probably doesn't happen. That is just preventative officiating. Unless what you describe with the coach happens early in the game, chances are I had a chance to deal with this coach earlier. If so, I have determined that he may present of some difficulties, or he is a pretty normal coach. If the latter is the case, and I totally kick something, I am going to do everything I can to mitigate the situation that I created. If he is being vulgar, or personal, then yes, I have to whack him. But if I can get a chance to tell him that I kicked it and I will work harder so that is doesn't happen again, then I prefer to do that. On the other hand, if he has been warned about previous behavior, or is obviously not going to calm down without being sat down, then by all means whack him. None of these plays occur in a vacuum. There is a context to every play which is just as important as the play itself. This is especially true when deal with behavior that may or may not deserve a good whacking. |
There's no way in hell's half acre I will be ignoring this.
What I'd do I'm not sure about right now, but I will not be ignoring it. My initials thought are a T or buh-bye. Probably a T. |
I've never had this with a player. If it were a player on the court, and depending on how bad he was complaining, he would probably earn a T. I did have a coach complaining that a timekeeper was too slow on the clock once. It was during a dead ball, late in the game. Coach comes out during a timeout and starts to yell at the timekeeper. I stepped in, realizing what this was about and told the coach to go to his bench and I would take to the timekeeper. My conversation with the time keeper was, "You are doing just fine. Nod your head like I'm telling you to do a better job with the clock just to appease this jerk and keep doing what you've been doing all game."

Had a fan come up and complain that they weren't stopping the clock during an AAU game. They had doubled up the court with makeshift clocks. The extension cord was short enough that the clockkeeper had to sit in a spot where he couldn't see the basket at the far end of the court, so sometimes the officials were out of sight as well.
I thought my partner was going to rip this guy a new a$$. It was actually pretty funny. She went after him hard; and that was when she thought he was a coach. :) Not sure she wouldn't have had to pry her right Converse out of his south end if she'd known he was a fan at the time. From the way the original post reads here, I've probably got a T on this kid for yelling at the officials. If we expect the scorer and the timer to be as objective as possible due to their status as officials, I'd better be willing to back them up here. |
I was a timer for a tournament game this past season. I hadn't done the clock all season, so I was a little rusty and had forgotten to stop the clock when the whistle blew. One player got kind of obnoxious about it. Even though it was legit, he had no authority to disrepect me or command me to do anything - I said back to him, "I don't get paid enough to take any crap from a player!"
:-D Good times. Also, before I get ripped a new one, it wasn't very loud, only the table crew, the player, and maybe 3-5 fans heard it...I didn't embarass the kid, but I called him on his actions. |
"Knock it off," I would say, "Or you'll end the game with a 'T' this day....."

I actually had a situation similar to this yesterday. The cut the court into 3 nice sized courts, and the outlet for the scoreboard was opposite the benches in the far corner of this court. The timer was starting the clock when the ball was thrown in. I noticed it and so did a coach, and he asked me about it. I said I also noticed it and will be speaking to the timer about it. So using the footbal mechanic I signal to the timer to start the clock on my arm. The timer got the hint, but the coach didn't, as I'm about to put the ball into play, the coach who is standing directly behind me starts screaming at the table. I turn around and tell him, "Coach sit down" My initial thought was to say "sit down and shut up" ;) but I caught myself before that. :D. If he continued I would've T'd him, although the timer was doing something wrong, we need to support our officiating crew. And if that means handing out technicals, then so be it.
