nonstarter A1 wearing #4 has been playing for 5 minutes in the first half. There have been more than two deadballs and even a timeout since A1 entered the game.

The officials scorer informed us that there is no #4 for team A in the book, and that A1 is listed as #1.

what are the penalties, if any? NCAA rules reference please.

Indirect T. 2 Ft's, charged to coach, not charged to team or a player, resume play at POI.

10.3 & 10.4

DanRef-

Thanks for the response. I didn't see in 10-3 where is lists changing a players # as an Indirect. It's not adding a player (10-3.3), nor is it an illegal (10-3.10) or identical #(10-3.9).

We had this happen in a game, and concluded that once we beckoned the player on, and the ball became live, that it was too late. (is this a NFHS rule?)

Since 10-3 does not include this situation, we felt we were right. But then we looked at 3-3.2 and the adjacent A.R. 3 on BR-58. The question seems to pertain to the starters #s being incorrect.

I'm still confused and looking for a precise reference. Any thoughts?

As you say you have to include 3.3.2, which prohibits changing a number. AR 3 looks like your play, it's certainly not the intent to limit number changes to nonstarters only.

Under 10.3.2 (which references 3.3) we penalize when discovered.

This is an administrative T. Only charged to the team. No "book" related T's are ever charged to any individual (player or coach).

thanks everyone. I think we were confused with the "statute of limitations" that applies to players sub/entering the game illegally (i.e. not beckoned on). once live balls starts, no penalty when discovered.

Intent of the rule is a good rule of thumb.
