I was eating lunch today and watching some highlights from yesterday when I saw Saint Louis coach Soderberg reacting in a way that told me (even though the sound was off) that he had gotten tossed from the game.

So I figured I'd look for the Saint Louis account of this. Read this:

Is this supposed to pass for journalism?

This is pretty unbelievable. I guess that's what happens when coaching staffs get to do the write-ups for the games and it gives insight into the BS that some coordinators of officials probably have to deal with. To think I was upset at a newspaper article that described my crew as "sprinting off the court" after a no call to end a game this week.

Interesting way for a coaching staff to get around the prohibition against commenting on the officiating. This is the most atrocious piece of spin I've seen in sports "journalism."

Forksref Mon Feb 21, 2005 10:42pm

Rich,

This is really surprising, coming from the school website. Usually, the ones I've read on school sites are rather bla generic descriptions of the stats that follow. I think this is really a lousy piece of "journalism." I normally see the partisan writing in the newspapers, not coming from the SID office, if this is the case here.

I see steve Welmer was the responsible party here. :)

That's also what happens when your team has only won 7 out of 25 games.

Amazing that these guys "think" they can do multiple high-level games in a row...for weeks on end! I don't think I'll ever make it to their level, but I just can't see calling 100+ D-I games/year! I'd be mentally & physically tired if I did 100+ high school games!!!

They can...and do. It's their job.

Adam Tue Feb 22, 2005 11:37am

I may wonder if I could do it, but I'm not comfortable saying they can't. I'd sure hate to have someone tell me I can't do more than X number of games because he can't.

I am in an interesting position responding to this thread being the journalist and the ref.

Please do not get this confused with "journalism." This is a standard press release from St. Louis' athletics department. The sole existance of collegiate athletics websites is for press releases. Of course SLU is going to say "blatent travel call," to make their coach look better.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd throw that in there.

It's unprofessional editorializing.
