Hey Guys,

Just got back from a Semi final jv game. It was a heated rivalry and a rough and intense game. This was my first semifinal game, i have been officiating for a year. I am a little upset because i had a "veteran Partner" that was suppose to be a help but it seems as if he blew a bunch of calls and even made calls in my area and over turning calls in my area. I was freaking pissed about that. One kid goes up and makes a terrific block in the key, i am the lead the ball goes out of play on the end line, i call white ball ( as the other team color is black), he over rules me and calls it a block with out even consulting with me. The coach went ballistic. I was standing there looking and feeling like an ***. That was one of three instances. Other times he made a terrrrrible call and the coaches look at me to change the call i just said it is his call to make. This was an awful experience for me and i hope it does not happen again. Just wanted to get this off my chest. Any help or guidance would certainly help right now.

P.S.- I know i missed a few calls but holy ---- this was crazy.

Welcome to the world of officiating.

Inverse Golden Rule - remember how you feel and DO NOT do unto others what just got done to you.

As far as what to do about it now, probably best to ignore this time around. As has been mentioned many times, there is no correlation to years of officiating and ability to officiate. There may however be a correlation between years of officiating and number/quality of games. Fact of life.

Always try to learn from partners, both positive and negative aspects of officiating.

The team leader is not always the most experienced

Cudos on making semi's in your first year. Remember that you are on your way up and your partner...... Since most HS play-off games have many eyes watching your response to this situation could get you a final.

Do not talk badly about him to any one in your area. Start on a good reputation. You only get one chance.

If someone else complains to you about him, you are allowed to listen, and then roll your eyes and say, "Yea, I've heard he's tough on new folks." When you know another ref well enough to consider yourself friends, you can also tell your story to them, if they aren't going to tell anyone else.

During a game like this, you're smart to remember the now timeless mick-maxim:

Get in
Get done
Get out.

I am just curious. What kind of pregame did you and your partner have?

Sometime Veteran mean years on the board and not years of experience. Just do what you do, call your game and help when he asks for help. Keep quiet and get through the game. I had a Veteran partner the other night and he embarrased me several time, talking loud and fussing at me. So I just did my best to get throught the game.

We didn't have a pregame because he came last minute to the game. So the problems started right away.

Good question though

Thanks for the comments and advice guys.
