I just want to make sure I understand this right.
I have not done a college game in a few weeks and never had this happen in my game, but want to make sure I have an understanding of the college technical foul procedure. I also do not have my rulebook in front of me. An AF player was on a fast break all alone and dunks the ball. A New Mexico player was behind the AF player and after the dunk and the AF player came completely to the floor, the NM player shoved the AF player completely into the stands. The officials called a technical foul properly. They had AF shoot two FTs and gave them the ball at the division line. Now was this right? I do not know if they ejected the NM player. Why did they not go to POI? Should they have gone to POI? Peace

Didn't see the game, but it sounds like the call was an intentional technical foul. Rule 10, Section 15, Art 1 on page 147. Directly following that is the penalty in Section 16, Art 1 - which is 2 shots and the ball at the division line.

Rut,
I saw the play too. They did it perfectly. This was an technical foul against the New Mexico player for intentional contact during a dead ball. The NCAA penalty for that is two shots plus possession. I'll get the clip from the NCAA book for you and post it. |

There was a similiar play in a thread a week or so ago. This is an intentional technical foul. 2 shots and the ball at the division line. No POI.
10-15-1 An intentional technical foul involves intentionally contacting an opponent in a non-flagrant manner when the ball is dead. 10-16-1 The penalty for an intentional technical foul shall be two free throws awarded to a player of the offended team and possession of the ball to the offended team at a designated spot at the division line. The officials nailed this one!
BR-147 RULE 10-13/FOULS AND PENALTIES
Section 15. (Men) Intentional Technical Fouls Art. 1. An intentional technical foul involves intentionally contacting an opponent in a non-flagrant manner when the ball is dead. Section 16. (Men) Penalty for Intentional Technical Fouls Art. 1. The penalty for an intentional technical foul shall be two free throws awarded to a player of the offended team and possession of the ball to the offended team at a designated spot at the division line. Art. 2. The offender shall not be ejected. |

Just a note without the rules citation. If the ball was picked up to be inbounded this would be handled differently. So the bottom line is there is a period of time after the ball goes through the hoop and before it is picked up for the throw-in where a technical foul is intentional.

I just got off the phone with one of the officials on the game and verified that they called an intentional technical foul. That is why AF kept the ball and inbounded from mid court.
