It's about good and evil, halos or tails.

Let's say the team is the such in such Angels, they may have a halo around the A in angels, but the number must be below the name.

Another team is the so and so Devils and the S in devils may have a tail that underlines the word, but the name in this case must be below the number.

Exactly. Seems over-officious and inconsistent. Just get rid of it. As long as the number is the right size and visible on front and back, who cares if it's above the tail or below the halo?

I think the problem is that if you let this one go, there'll be another one with more fancy "decoration" and then another even more intricate. Pretty soon, the numbers won't be easily distinguished. At least, that's how I've always read the spirit of this rule.
