I wasn't there so I don't know what happened. But people are saying (including the AD, both coaches and assistant coaches) that this official did not make any contact with the officer.

I know the official in question and have seen him blow up at fans before (as recently as December). Of course, this doesn't mean that he's guilty in this situation. The lesson to learn here is that once law enforcement or game management takes over, let them handle it and get back to the game.

The Deputy obtained written statements from two school employees and conferred with his supervisor first.

Being both a cop and an official, I have to side witht eh Deputy here. The Deputy took the offenders out of the playing area. Mr. Knapp (who is a great official BTW) should have left well enough alone. Sometimes when you go searching for a battle you find one. I can assure you that, as an officer, if I am trying to assist an official and take care of an unruly fan, the official needs to let me handle it. If you get into the middle of an incident that I am handling, and you grab me, you will probably go to jail.

This is all southern Illinois needs. There have been two incidents that I remember happening recently where officials were attacked. Then there was the riot at Cairo in the Regional. Now this!

I would agree. Only problem is you've got a school admin and two coaches saying the exact opposite. I deff agree this could of been avoided if he allowed the officer to do his job. And yes, this is all we need, both problems occuring during the post-season. Not good any way you look at it.

I_R,

Matt e-mailed me, said we are on Nov. 23rd instead of the 22nd.

Talked with a guy tonight who actually was working this game with this official. The way it sounds, this officer could be in some trouble.
