Grade 4-5 boys tournament, semi-final game.

B1 goes in, tries to get LGP on the A1, B1 fails, is called for the block and goes flying.

B1 is on the ground, hunched over crying.

Coach B: If I come on the court I've gotta take you off, and I'm not doing that.

Now, I know the rule is if an official beckons the coach on, the player must be replaced or a time out must be charged.

So I beckon the coach. The coach still doesn't attend to his player. I beckon again, explaining to him that his player will be coming off regardless of whether he steps foot on the court, with the exception of calling a timeout.

He still refuses to attend to his player.

Then after about 2 minutes on the gound, the player gets up and starts limping to the bench.

The coach tells him to get ready to play, I tell the coach unless he calls a timeout I want a replacement.

My partner comes up to me and says, "The coach didn't come onto the court, so let the player stay."

At which point I explained the rule. My P backed off.

I was disgusted with this coaches lack of responsibility for the safety of his players. I don't think he's fit to coach if that's how he'll treat an injured player.

In the end we get our replacement. And the game goes on without incident. Well not totally without incident, but that's another thread.

Doesn't excuse the behavior...but, it's the only thing I can think of since you didn't say a parent's foot had to be removed from the coach's A**.

I'll bet rookie dude is right. Sounds like it was his kid. Regardless, what a jerk. Wonder how he'll react of he gets hurt and needs some help any time soon. If only they had a flagrant technical for stupidity!

I didn't think it was his kid, but then again it might have been, then it would make sense why none of the other parents made a scene.

Safety should be the #1 priority of anything. There is no game anywhere above the safety of it's participants--'nuff said.

We don't know the whole story here, I'm betting. What if this kid has come up crying our pouting a dozen times before in the season? If that's the case, I have no problem with the coach trying to teach a life lesson here.

5th graders cry all the time, regardless of gender. Unless you can physically see something wrong with the kid, let the coach decide.

I agree, safety is the most important aspect of our jobs. If the coach didn't show concern over the safety of one of his players, I will.

If you could infer that the kid had a legit injury, I have no problem with you forcing a sub. It's just my opinion that alot of kids are spoiled brat babies at that age, and there's a good chance their just pulling a stunt to gain attention.

Kind of like Coach K "fainting" last night. :)

Safety is the #1 thing, this is just off the wall. Like everyone said, there's probably a good 90% chance that this was his kid....think how'd you react if your kid was down and your coach refused to help him just go he could play an extra minute or so? WOW

We have a kid that plays every year but has not improved at all. If he gets the ball passed to him he usually trips and goes to the floor where he starts the crying bit. The other kids are good about not teasing him. I falls onto us and both coaches to get him back up and moving. Luckily the last time he was, somewhat, in the motion of shooting (NBA continuation rules applied here) Got him up and on the line he shot the 1st crying and by the 2nd he was good. This is only possible because we know the kids. In your situation I would have done nothing different.

Did the kid get back in the game soon? was he healthy or did he sit on the bench for a long time?

The coach put him back in within a minute

I just talked to the official did the team the next day, it was his son who was hurt.

And if I had known this at the time I still would've sent him off.
