Will the crew working this evening just set up camper chairs and watch the "shoot & hoot" tonight? I think Grinnell's offense averages 125 points per game.

Do most D-III schools use 3-whistle crews....or are they still 2-whistle?

they might lead the nation in scoring, but they're 5-13. :)There won't be many calls in the paint for Grinnell, though. I don't think they like fouls, it gives the other team a rest.

3-whistle. I taped the game. I had a girls' game tonight at Mineral Point. Four varsity dates this week and this was the first that didn't include a technical. 30-point blowout, though.

I watched it. Very exciting game.

I'm sorry to say I thought it was poorly officiated. The timeout granted to Grinnell at the end... ouch. Then again, if I had to run up and down the court like those three did tonight, I'd probably suffer some mental fatigue as well.

I'm watching the HS game on before the Grinnell game now. Would be nice if the officials occasionally counted for a 10-second violation on the way up.

Added: But frankly, they called a great game.

OK, that wasn't good. But how can one say the rest of the game was poorly officiated? It was all over the place, sloppy, sloppy basketball. I thought the crew did just fine with it to be honest. Best anyone could do in my opinion.

To be honest i didn't enjoy it that much.

I found it hard to get into the game. I think it had to do with the way Grinnell played defense. Not my cup of tea.

If you had asked me before the game, I would've agreed with Snaqwells point that Grinnell probably wouldn't foul much. It appeared, though, because of their massive substitutions, that fouls were no big deal to Grinnell. I mean, some of the fouls they committed were just silly.

We wondered how officials react when they find out they're assigned a Grinnell game - either "Great, I get Grinnell!" or, "Oh, great, I get Grinnell". Lots of exercise.

Ugly basketball

The style of Basketball was just plain ugly. For some reason there was so much action I kept watching it though. I really felt for the officals I mean it was nonstop run run run! The coach for grinnell may want to try a little defense into his coaching. It just reminded me of a group of guys in the park playing a pick up game and running with no structure. Just my 2 cents!

I'm not a huge fan of their playing style, but it is kind of fun to watch occasionally for a change of pace. I also enjoyed it because one of their players is from my hometown (about a population of 300) so it was kind of cool to hear my hometown's name on national TV. As far as the officiating, I agree that the timeout at the end should not have been granted. It tallest official on the court was an evaluator I had last summer and I've seen him work a few times. He's always impressed me when I saw him. On a side note, I've ran into him a couple of times between games and he is great about taking a few minutes and asking us up and comers how our season is and such.

Anyone catch the little story about the 2 referees who asked the Grinnell coach to calm down because they couldn't keep up with the pace. They decided to remain at each end of the court and referee by long range. No criticism of them, just a neat story. Actually, with the pace they play at just camping an official at each lead and one at center court may not be a bad idea.

Fun game to watch but I would think if you take 60 three-pointers a game you would at least have one player that could make one occasionally.

My son suggested all Grinnell games have at least two crews, so the refs can sub in.

One of my best friends worked them a couple of years ago....and went to triple overtime. I met him for dinner afterwards and thought I would have to lift him out of his chair when we were done eating.

TriggerMN Fri Feb 04, 2005 12:20pm

Yes, said friend had a big steak dinner and two mongo beers at Applebee's after the game, got home, and was still 7 pounds lighter than he was that morning.

Grinnell was much more exciting about 10 years ago when they actually had kids who could make shots.

As for their defense, well, I'll say this. There was more defense played in the Grinnell game last night than there was in that high school game that was on ESPN2 before it. That scrimmage (err...game...I guess) was a flat-out joke.

Junker Fri Feb 04, 2005 01:34pm

Trigger.

We'll say hi to the waitresses at Rubes tomorrow for you. I suppose when we get to the casino I'll have to win us a room. Remember, there is no napping in the bingo parlor. I'll also make sure said friend sees the thread and calls this weekend.
