I was watching the UNC Greensboro-Ga. Southen women's game on TV last Saturday.

Late in the game, the trail official was counting 10 seconds in the back court against the press-breaking team. Because this was a women's game with no 10 in the BC, he was corrected by his partners and the team was given the ball back. The coaches and announcers couldn't believe it.

I've been there before: if it's Tuesday it must be women's rules...and I thought the incident was funny at first.

But then, the guy continued to count in the back court on the next two possessions when he was the trail! Thankfully, he didn't have the chance to call another one.

Granted, this isn't top 10 hoops, but these are 2 pretty good lower level D-1 teams.

I'll bet his assignor either chewed him a new one or demoted him

I don't think I've ever gotten over two in the backcourt.
Also, I have found myself getting to about 1-1/2 counts while dribbling in front court.
Every now and then I try to crawl into those volleyball post holes. :(

I was visiting my daughter who attends UNCG and got to see the game you are talking about in person. (Double Header too - wasn't I lucky to have picked just that weekend to satisfy my basketball fedish, Opps,I mean to visit my daughter)

I had notice earlier the ref was counting in the backcourt and was wondering what he was counting. Fortunely both coaches took it well. The UNCG coach laughed and the Georgia Southern coach just nodded his head OK when the call was explained. How embarrasing to make that mistake in a televised game.

I often find myself continuing to count long after the ball has crossed the division line. Do any of you do that too?
Also, those of you who might referee high school and small college games, do you have any problems keeping the NFHS and NCAA rules straight?

How about media time outs? I have enough problem keeping the regular time outs straight in my head without worrying about the media wants and needs. That seems to be another ball game altogether. How many of you have experience with media time outs, and what problems do they bring into the game management aspect of the contest?

Sounds long a fill-in who knew the rule but is in the habit of counting from doing NF games. The local association in Greensboro is the largest in the state and has several college officials working in it.

When girls AAU kicks off, I catch myself counting the first several times that the ball is inbounding. It's just a conditioned response.

On occasion I do, but I drop it pretty quickly. No harm, since I haven't been so stupid as to blow a 10 second violation. :)

Yet!

You would have an even better time in our area. Last years AAU regionals here used NCAA women's rules but no shot clock in preliminary rounds, shot clock and (and I guess no 10 sec) in medal rounds (you can tell we didn't make it that far or I would know!). Our other tournaments are NF rules but free throw lane is on release like NCAA with different times and clock stoppage procedures in each tournament.

Need to stay on your toes and know what the rules of the day are - coaches, players, table and refs.
