Girls 8th Grade Playoff game. Player attempts second FT, ball hits rim, bounces straight up, high over rim, grazes overhead guy wire (used for raising the basket to ceiling when not in use), and goes in. I believe this is OOB by rule, but as the ball just barely grazed the wire (did not appear to alter flight of ball), and the wire was drooping down from its normal position, the ref allowed the point ( I asked him after the game, he remembered the play, and mentioned that the ball just barely touched the wire, and the wire shouldn't have been there).

Would any of you have done the same? Would the level of the game make a difference?

Just curious. It would seem like a petty call in relation to how other calls are made, but OOB is OOB.

Of course, the game ended in a one-point win for the team that made the FT, or no one would have even remembered the FT.

By rule - the only time you would ignore hitting the wire would be if the point allows you to avoid an overtime.

Whose rule is that? My rule. ;)

But it was there. And it's a basket support, which is out of bounds. How do you know if just brushing against it caused the ball to change it's path or not? Tough luck for the shooting team, but out of bounds is out of bounds. Level has nothing to do with it.

Rule 7-1-2 states, the ball is OOB when it touches...
d. The ceiling, overhead equipment or supports.

I would deem the wire overhead equipment and therefore OOB.

I agree with Padgetts rule

what about a girl wire

Is it really called a guy wire. I always thought that it was a "guide" wire

I agree OOB. Next question. OOB off the shooter? Or AP?
I don't know. But would rule OOB on the shooter. Is that correct?

Yes, the shooter touched it last so the shooter caused it to go out of bounds.

While dictionary.com does not seem to be much help, The first definition of "guy" in my pocket dictionary refers to a wire. The second definition refers to slang for a man.

Guy is a verb meaning to support or stabilize with a guy wire or cable.

The other gender from "guy" wires, is "doll" wires, not "girl" wires.
