I had a coach get really upset with me this weekend!
Senior night for the boys! 4th Quarter games a 40 point game. Coach of winning team has pulled out his starters for almost the entire third quarter. With 3 minutes to go in the game Coach(Winning) puts back in all his seniors! Then next dead ball pulls them out, one at a time(so they could each get applause! Loosing coach(out of town)! Where I live teams have to fly in. Coach goes bonkers on me, about how I could allow this type of substitution!(by the book it was wrong)! My question! When you are reffing a Senior night or what ever you call it! Do you allow for this tyoe of substitution? Or do you go by the book? AK ref SE! |

It's a one time thing, let it happen. The game is for the kids. I wouldn't let him do this all night but this is different.

AK ref SE,
If you know that is what is intended, let is slide. But I had a coach get mad at me on Saturday for trying to bring in subs, one by one, but the game was still in the third quarter, and the game on the line. Both coaches did this back and forth, until the fourth sub, I said "no more." But that was for stradegy, and the coach said to me, "how can you do this, and it is Senior night?"

If it is late fourth quarter of a special game you need to let it go. It is time for the kids and their parents to enjoy it for the last time.
I am sure the other coach does similar stuff, my guess he was just hacked at getting waxed this late in the year. |

Let it go
Last night A's coach wanted to replace all five seniors at the same time near end of game. The dead ball was a 2 shot foul. A1 missed the second with about 2 mins. left. After a minute and a half still no whistles, sub is still waiting at the table. I blew the whistle told A's coach to please wipe the (imaginary) puddle of water on the floor. The sub came in and everyone was happy! Senior night is for the kids. If it doesn't make a farce of the game, let it go.

I must be missing something here. My understanding of the rule is the sub is required to be at the table before we are ready to put the ball in play. If a coach can time it so he can string in 5 subs, good for him. And if it is boarderline that the sub is at the table in time, like in any other game, i will let the sub in the game. This coach complaining should try to take lessons on coaching instead of whining about subs.

Let 'em go out one atta time.
After 4 to 7 to 10 years of playing for a school, a kid deserves that recognition. His family and peers deserve the opportunity to rise for him and applaud during that last home stand.
How mant drops of sweat? How many sprints? How many practices? How many years? An average ball player deserves that 5 seconds of "attaboys", even if he sat on the bench his whole career. Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! |

This is a tactic that coaches use to delay the game and to play cat and mouse with each other. I don't see this tactic used very often but if I do, we handle it. Once that second or third string along sub somes in, I'm going to drop my hand and my partner is going to hand the ball to the thrower before the 4th sub gets completely to the table. Then I politely remind the coach that if he wants his subs to get into the game, he needs to get them to the table in a more timely manner. Quote:
Gotta love that movie! ![]()

Re: Good game management
Actually, all subs must be ready at the same time, if they are not, you do not have to let them in the game. You have a right to keep the game moving, period.
