Just checking to see if any of you are acitvitie/athletic directors as well as officials. I'm starting my MA next year and think it would be fun and a good challenge to be an AD. My concern, though, is that I woldn't be able to work a varsity basketball schedule since I'd have home activities to oversee. If you do both, how do you manage it?

Ask Rick Hartzell. :)

We have two athletic directors in our association, one at a 2A school, the other at a 4A school. They get very little opportunity to officiate.

Yeah almost impossible to do. Fresh/Soph Boys & Girls, JV/V Boys & Girls to oversee. Not a lot of time in there to officiate.

AD's generally have to be at most home basketball games, and seeing that many leagues schedule all of their games on the same nights each week, it's tough to get games in your area.
That said, it's a great area to get into (if you can give up the reffing.) I know a lot of refs, though, who are intramural directors at various colleges and universities. Rec sports departments are generally very flexible about hours and scheduling. |
Thanks for the input. I'm thinking I might wait to look for AD jobs until my body starts to break down and I can't work games anymore. I might check into assistant AD jobs, we'll just have to see. I'm not ready to give up my season or especially my classroom just yet.
