Which is worse, a coach who doesn't know the rules, or an assignor who does know the rules, but tells you to ignore the rules or to use his rules?

Depends on which rules you're talking about.

...An assignor, not the emotional coach.

An assignor. You don't have a clue what to expect from an assignor that has no idea about the rules and makes up their own. I think it would be general chaos.

What's worse is the local association of officials that don't have enough power to tell the assignor to quit spreading ignorance.

Worse yet is the local association of officials that has the power to tell the assignor to straighten up, and then doesn't do it.

Agree with that. You don't really expect extensive rules and rules application knowledge from a coach, and it's a bonus when you get it. It should be part of an assignor's job description though.

Not a question, just some rambling thoughts.

My assignor is a gem. Never questioned any calls or at least I can't remember him doing so. I see posts like "you can't call it that way here" or "if you call that around here, you won't get any games".
I also seem to recall a variation on the whether assignors are used or HS find there own officials. Pesonally, I can't think of anything closer to paying off an official than the schools finding their own officials. While there are the issues that can come up with assignors, it does separate the schools and the officials some.

My thoughts are that the assignors are the bureacrats that can run or ruin the officiating civilization depending on whether they are on the dark side or not.

Thanks for the posts.

Neither are good! ;) But it's already been said it's a plus if the coach knows the rules. But an assignor would be worse.

I still say it depends on which rules we're talking about. Is the assignor saying to lay off of the bench techs for assistant coaches standing? Is the assignor saying to back off of the 10 second free throw count? Is the assignor saying to apply advantage/disadvantage to the 3 second count? Frankly, I need specifics before I can judge an assignor based on what SamIam posted.
