At the captains' meeting, before the hand shake, the captains came to center with their backs to their teams. The referee asked the players to face in the direction of their team warmups "too avoid confusion for the players".
So the captains all crossed over the division line.

The confusion on all the captains' faces indicated to me that they had never done this before.

Is this a common practice in basketball land?

I just want the players to be at the meeting. I do not even worry about those types of things.

Peace

I've only seen it in football during a coin toss.

They've been shooting at their basket for several minutes just how is them being at a 1 minute, or less, meeting going to confuse them?

We also keep them on their half of the floor during warm ups, so doesn't putting the captains on the opponents side of the division line contradict the "taunting" during warm ups POE?

Never heard of that one, Mick.

RookieDude Mon Jan 24, 2005 04:38pm

Sheesh...what happens when a non-jumper has his back to his basket when he lines up around the circle for the jump?
There are players with their backs to all sides of the floor.
Does this confuse the players as to which way they are going?

This is how a lot of the Rs I work with have it done, I don't really see the purpose but then again I don't really get any say in it as U1/U2.

I've never heard of it here. But I haven't polled all 325 members of the PBOA, either.

They do it here in Greater Georgia. Pretty good ball in this area considering top NBA picks have come out of Atlanta area high schools. Don't see the harm in doing it.

So does that mean we'll have more NBA players if we switch things around? :)

Dude, who said it was for the player's benefit? :D

South GA BBall Ref Mon Jan 24, 2005 07:01pm

It is common here in South GA, as it is throughout the state. Been doing it for the past 10 years I've been officiating.
